The Ukrainian and Russian militaries are increasingly experimenting with AI in warfare, applying it in several areas, from identifying enemy positions and gathering intelligence to clearing mines from battle zones.
For Ukraine’s armed forces, AI has quickly become a critical component of their defense strategy. According to Serhiy Beskrestnov, a consultant to the Ukrainian defense forces, this technology represents both an opportunity and a growing concern. While inspecting a recently captured Russian drone, he found that it was not an ordinary model. The device was enhanced with AI software capable of independently locating and attacking its targets.
Yuriy Myronenko, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, shared that their forces receive over 50,000 video feeds from the front lines every month. These videos are processed by AI systems that can quickly spot potential targets and map them for action. According to him, AI helps manage the overwhelming flow of battlefield data, allowing decisions to be made faster and more accurately.
AI is now seen as a tool that can sharpen military planning, improve resource use, and potentially save soldiers’ lives. On the battlefield, it’s already changing how weapons work. Ukrainian forces have started using AI programs that let drones automatically home in on a target and complete their mission without further control.
Developers expect that, in time, these systems will become fully autonomous, capable of finding and destroying targets entirely on their own. Yaroslav Azhnyuk, the head of The Fourth Law, a Ukrainian tech company, stated that soldiers could soon launch a drone using a simple app. The drone would locate the target, drop explosives, analyze the damage, and return—without needing a skilled pilot.
Such AI-powered drones could also strengthen Ukraine’s defenses against long-range Russian attacks, including those using Shahed drones. Azhnyuk believes that machines guided by computers can outperform humans in detection and precision.
Myronenko confirmed that Ukraine is already testing partial versions of these systems and could deploy thousands by 2026.
Still, developers remain cautious. Vadym from DevDroid, a company that builds AI-assisted weaponry, said they have avoided giving their remote-controlled guns full autonomy due to the risk of friendly fire. He explained that AI might misidentify soldiers if both sides wear similar uniforms.
There are also moral concerns. Fully automated systems could struggle to recognize civilians or surrendering troops, raising questions about accountability. Myronenko insists that the final call to attack should always involve a human operator.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned the United Nations that AI is driving “the most dangerous arms race in history,” urging the world to establish strict global regulations on AI weapons before it is too late.
With companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) heavily investing in advancing supercomputing using quantum computing technology, we can expect even more disruption to several sectors where these technologies can be deployed.
