The United States will invest $5 billion in a major artificial intelligence research initiative aimed at addressing complex scientific challenges across a range of disciplines, according to a recent announcement made by the Trump administration.
The funding will support projects designed to uncover the underlying causes of chronic illnesses, speed up the development of new medicines, and create stronger, more durable construction materials.
As part of the initiative, researchers will gain access to the Energy Department’s AI systems, supercomputers, and specialized scientific datasets. The resources, along with other technical infrastructure, are expected to help scientists conduct large-scale computational experiments and develop AI models capable of solving difficult research questions.
Speaking to Reuters, Michael Kratsios, President Donald Trump’s chief tech adviser, said the effort will bring together expertise and resources from across the federal government. Fifteen agencies are expected to participate, including the Departments of Transportation, the Interior, Defense, and Energy.
Kratsios said the White House is coordinating cooperation among agencies that oversee different scientific fields so they can contribute to a broader national strategy focused on using AI to advance research.
The announcement follows the release of a White House report that outlines a broader shift in the federal government’s approach to research funding. The proposal would also increase the administration’s influence over how federal research money is distributed.
According to the report, government investment in science should remain subject to political oversight and accountability. Since returning to office for a second term, President Trump has sought a greater role in determining how federal research funds are allocated.
Those efforts have faced legal challenges. In January, a federal appeals court ruled that the administration could not reduce National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant funding provided to universities conducting medical and scientific research.
Artificial intelligence systems rely on large volumes of information to recognize patterns, make predictions, and assist with decision-making. The federal government holds extensive collections of data covering subjects such as critical minerals, chemicals, and public health records, making it one of the world’s largest repositories of scientific information.
