Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, recently posted fake images which suggest that Taylor Swift and her fans are supporting him in the upcoming election. The images posted by the former president seem like deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence and have been shared by right-wing accounts on social media accounts that have a history of spreading misinformation. These images are accompanied by a message from Trump, who posted, “I accept!” on X.
In one of the pictures, the pop star’s fans, popularly known as Swifties, can be seen smiling and wearing T-shirts written “Swifties for Trump.”
Another image had a fake headline beneath a satire tag, which suggests that Swifties turned to the former president after Swift cancelled one of her concerts in Vienna this month. A third image portrays the pop star dressed as Uncle Sam, a U.S. Army character for a recruitment poster from WWI, imploring people to vote for Trump.
Swift, who hasn’t endorsed a presidential candidate for this year’s election publicly, supported the Democratic Party during the last elections. The singer also criticized Trump publicly during his presidency, especially amid countrywide protests following the murder of George Floyd by police officers.
In 2020, the pop star posted on X (Twitter at the time), “After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?” She continued, adding “We will vote you out in November.”
Swift hasn’t yet responded to the former president’s posts.
These images are some of the many other AI-generated pictures Trump has posted in the last couple of days. Trump is known for spreading misinformation, having recently shared an image generated by AI that portrays presidential nominee Kamala Harris speaking at a communist rally at the Democratic National Convention. The convention is being held this week in Chicago.
In addition to this, the GOP party candidate also shared a deepfake video of himself and Elon Musk dancing to “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. Musk, who owns X, has endorsed the former president. This comes after the billionaire held a two-hour conversation with Trump on X last week.
In other news, Trump claimed that a real photo with thousands of supporters who attended a campaign rally held by Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, her running mate, was generated by artificial intelligence. On Truth Social, his social media platform, Trump claimed that the crowds in Kamala’s photo didn’t exist.
These cases of deepfakes being used to influence opinions regarding the upcoming elections create a broader need for industry regulation so that the many companies that focus on AI innovations which are truly helpful, such as International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM), don’t get mired in the negative press that wrong users of AI tools generate.
