Radio Station in Poland Relaunches with AI Presenters Replacing Humans

OFF Radio Kraków, a radio station in Poland, relaunched last week with a twist: AI presenters. In its statement, the station revealed that its new presenters were designed to reach younger audiences by discussing art, cultural, and social issues.

Marcin Pulit, the head of the station, added that they were also focused on finding out whether AI was a threat or an opportunity for radio, media and journalism.

The station’s dismissal of journalists weeks ago in favor of virtual presenters generated by artificial intelligence received a lot of backlash, especially after it received nationwide attention. This came after journalist and film critic, Mateusz Demski, published an open letter that protested the replacement of employees with AI.

In his letter, Demski explained that this was a dangerous precedent that could affect everyone, arguing that it paved the way for a world where experienced individuals in creative industries and those in the media sector would be replaced by machines. He had hosted a show on the station from 2022, conducting interviews with Ukrainians fleeing the war, until August this year.

Demski was one of the journalists who were let go by OFF Radio Kraków, noting in his statement that the broadcaster’s decision was particularly shocking as the public station is supported by taxpayer funds.

He also revealed that over 15,000 individuals had signed the petition, adding that he’d gotten many calls from hundreds of individuals, many of them young people who didn’t want to be the subject of this experiment.

Despite Demski’s claims, Pulit maintains that no journalist was let go because of artificial intelligence but because listenership was very low.

Minister of digital affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, revealed that after reading Demski’s appeal, there existed a need for legislations to regulate artificial intelligence. In his post on X, the minister stated that while he was a fan of the development of artificial intelligence, he believed that some boundaries were being crossed. He added that the widespread use of this technology needed to be done for people and not against them.

OFF Radio Kraków broadcast an interview last week, carried out by an AI presenter whose voice sounded like Wislawa Szymborska. The Polish poet, who died in 2012, was also the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The president of the Wisława Szymborska Foundation, Michał Rusinek, revealed that he’d agreed to let the broadcaster use the poet’s name in the broadcast. Rusinek added that the poet would have liked it.

Some applications of AI technology are bound to trigger controversy, but companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are bound to continue commercializing their AI solutions for use in different industries as the capacity of computers to solve complex computational challenges improve.
