Nvidia, the technology giant led by CEO Jensen Huang, built its reputation on the advanced chips that helped fuel the rapid rise of AI. Now Huang is betting that the next stage of the AI boom can do more than transform computing. He believes it can help rebuild American manufacturing and strengthen domestic industry.
That ambition is tied to a major factory expansion taking shape in Sherman, Texas, about an hour north of Dallas.
On Tuesday, Nvidia announced a significant enhancement to its AI infrastructure strategy through a $2 billion collaboration with Coherent, the facility’s owner. The project will focus on producing specialized materials used in high-performance lasers that move data between computer chips. Executives say the technology enables large numbers of chips to function together as a unified system, improving processing speed, efficiency, and overall computing power.
In a statement, Huang described AI-focused production facilities as a key component of what he sees as a new industrial era.
The Sherman project also serves as a test of a broader argument advanced by Huang: that artificial intelligence can create employment opportunities rather than simply replace workers. As AI becomes capable of handling tasks ranging from software development and data analysis to manufacturing operations and vehicle control, concerns about workforce displacement continue to grow.
Under Huang’s leadership, Nvidia has evolved from a chipmaker into a company increasingly focused on delivering complete AI platforms. Its rise has coincided with soaring market value and growing expectations that AI could reshape industries and generate enormous economic gains. At the same time, debates have intensified over who benefits from that growth and how the technology will affect society.
Supporters point to AI’s role in scientific research and productivity improvements. Critics raise concerns about energy demands, employment impacts, and emerging security risks.
The federal government’s approach has also shifted. While President Donald Trump’s administration previously favored limited regulation, it has recently adopted a more active stance.
New restrictions were placed on advanced AI technologies, and Trump signed an executive order encouraging government review of emerging models. He has also floated the possibility of public participation in the financial gains generated by AI companies.
Despite those discussions, Trump views the sector as a major driver of future economic expansion. He has repeatedly praised Huang and emphasized the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
The Texas facility has received bipartisan support. Funding included $33 million from the CHIPS and Science Act during the Biden administration, along with an additional $17 million grant approved under Trump. According to Coherent CEO Jim Anderson, strong demand linked to AI prompted the company to increase the scale of its plans.
Coherent estimates the expansion will support roughly 1,000 jobs, including more than 500 positions in manufacturing, engineering, and technical fields. The company expects the plant’s footprint to double while production capacity increases fourfold.
The facility will manufacture more indium phosphide, a material essential for lasers that allow Nvidia systems to exchange information at extremely high speeds. The technology could reduce power consumption by as much as half while lowering computing costs, making AI services more affordable and accessible.
Economists have highlighted the enormous investments flowing into AI infrastructure. Recent research suggests the technology’s contribution to the U.S. economy could grow substantially in the coming years. Nvidia executives say the company’s long-term goal is to build complete AI ecosystems that support domestic supply chains, expand industrial production, and help restore manufacturing capacity within the United States.
As AI continues to proliferate, more companies like Datavault AI Inc. (NASDAQ: DVLT) are likely to be established to make AI-powered solutions and products. Such innovations will increase employment opportunities for skilled professionals.
