A federal jury in California has sided with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, bringing a closely followed courtroom fight with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to a dramatic close. The dispute, centered on the future and founding purpose of OpenAI, highlighted tensions between two influential figures in the technology sector.
Jurors in Oakland determined that OpenAI, Altman, and company president Greg Brockman were not responsible for claims brought by Musk, who alleged that the organization had abandoned its original mission and improperly benefited financially. The lawsuit accused OpenAI’s leadership of violating commitments made when the company was established.
The jury reached its verdict in under two hours, rejecting accusations that OpenAI’s executives transformed a charitable initiative into a profit-driven venture for personal gain. The outcome removes a major legal obstacle for the AI firm as it reportedly moves toward plans for a public listing, potentially valued near $1 trillion.
Although the jury’s determination was advisory rather than final, presiding Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers quickly backed the decision and dismissed Musk’s allegations. Speaking in court, Gonzalez Rogers said substantial evidence supported the jurors’ conclusion and explained she had been ready to end the case immediately.
Attorneys for OpenAI argued that Musk had waited too long to file his complaint, maintaining he understood the company’s commercial ambitions years earlier. Jurors agreed that the case, submitted in 2024, exceeded the legal timeframe allowed for such claims.
Following the ruling, courtroom activity quickly faded as lawyers gathered documents and jurors were thanked for their service. Each member of the jury received a signed pocket Constitution from the judge as a gesture of appreciation.
Outside the courthouse, OpenAI attorney William Savitt said weeks of testimony and extensive evidence convinced jurors that Musk’s legal challenge was an effort to disrupt a rival. Savitt argued that the decision reflected a careful examination of facts rather than a procedural technicality.
Musk’s legal team offered a different interpretation, insisting the proceedings had exposed important details about OpenAI despite the defeat. Attorneys Marc Toberoff and Steven Molo argued that the trial revealed concerns about the company’s evolution and maintained the verdict rested largely on timing issues.
Musk later announced plans to appeal the outcome. He argued that neither the court nor the jury fully addressed the substance of his accusations and continued to claim OpenAI’s leadership diverted the organization from its founding purpose.
The three-week trial featured testimony from prominent technology executives, including Satya Nadella. Jurors also cleared Microsoft, which Musk had accused of supporting misconduct tied to OpenAI’s restructuring. The case offered a rare public glimpse into internal disagreements surrounding one of Silicon Valley’s most influential companies.
The tech industry, including firms like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS), hopes that the two leading figures find a way to put their past behind them and focus on pushing forward their individual plans now that both companies are looking to go public soon.
