EU Unveils AI Office to Act as Global Trendsetter

Last week, the European Commission set up a new AI office that will focus on drawing up and implementing policies for the bloc. The office, which will also serve as an international reference point, will support the development and use of trustworthy artificial intelligence and protect against risks.

In a statement posted on its site, the commission noted that the AI office formed the foundation for one European artificial intelligence governance system. It added that the office promoted an innovative ecosystem of trustworthy artificial intelligence and would ensure a coherent and effect approach on AI at the global level. In addition, the office will work with difference experts, institutions and stakeholders, including a panel of experts to ensure strong links to the scientific community, to accomplish various tasks.

The European Commission first announced its AI strategy in 2021. The AI office will focus on supporting governance bodies in member states while also coordinating policy between them.

During the first AI safety summit last year, the Bletchley Declaration was signed by 28 countries, including the United Kingdom, China and the United States. The declaration centers on building risk-based policies across nations to ensure AI safety and the identification of AI safety risks.

Europe has also released the European Union AI Act, a comprehensive law on artificial intelligence. The European Parliament announced that artificial intelligence developed within member states should remain transparent, safe, nondiscriminatory, traceable and environmentally friendly. Safety in the use and development of artificial intelligence has remained a concern since the public was introduced to how technology could transform on such a scale.

In an effort to manage this development, the European Commission also launched the GenAI4EU initiative, which will focus on supporting small and midsize enterprises as well as startups in ensuring that any new artificial intelligence project respects the European Union’s rules and values.

Additionally, commission president Ursula von der Leven recently announced a new initiative that would make supercomputers in Europe available to innovative startups. She also launched a competition that would award prize money to companies that developed new artificial-intelligence models under open-source licenses for noncommercial use.

In the United States, the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute was established under the National Institute of Standards of Technology following the safety summit last year. The institute will facilitate the development of standards for security, safety and testing of artificial intelligence models.

The establishment of entities to provide guidelines that AI companies such as C3.ai Inc. (NYSE: AI) can follow as they bring to market various products and solutions will help address some of the concerns that some sections of the population have about these new technologies.
