New research from the University of Kansas Life Span Institute has determined that parents who sought medical advice on their child’s health were turning to artificial intelligence more than doctors. For the study, the researchers asked 116 parents aged between 18-65 to rate texts generated by either ChatGPT or an actual doctor, under an expert’s supervision.
The researchers found that parents rated texts generated by artificial intelligence as more trustworthy, moral, and credible. They also observed little differences between the experts and the AI chatbot on benchmarks of perceived reliance, accuracy, expertise, trustworthiness, and morality.
They found that the responses given by the AI chatbot were rated higher in accuracy and trustworthiness, with the participants admitting that they were more likely to rely on data from the chatbot than a doctor.
Calissa Leslie-Miller, the lead author of the study, revealed that their study started right after ChatGPT was rolled out. She explained that they had concerns about how parents would use this AI tool to obtain health data for their kids. She admitted that they were surprised with the study’s results, noting that artificial intelligence was already being integrated in ways that weren’t plain to see.
She added that soon, individuals wouldn’t be able to recognize when they were reading expert content vs. text generated by AI.
Leslie-Miller then cautioned that while ChatGPT could work well in most cases, it could still generate wrong information for users as it wasn’t an expert. Users are advised to be cautious of information provided by AI and rely on generated data that’s consistent with expert advice.
Dr. Harvey Castro, an artificial intelligence expert and ER physician, agrees that combining artificial intelligence and human expertise is more effective as compared to relying solely on AI. Castro calls attention to the fact that while artificial intelligence can offer valuable data, it can’t fully comprehend the symptoms and medical history of a child.
He notes that this makes the human element in healthcare irreplaceable, especially since involving a qualified healthcare professional in a medical case ensures that the information provided is safe, personalized, and accurate. In addition, he encourages health care professionals to leverage this tech to provide more efficient and faster care while still exercising critical thinking and affording a personal touch to their patients.
In their conclusion, the researchers noted that ChatGPT was capable of influencing behavioral intentions for diet, medication, and sleep decision-making. The research’s findings were reported in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology.
This vote of confidence in AI solutions is likely to spur on other entities like Salesforce Inc. (NYSE: CRM) that are focusing on bringing cutting-edge AI functionality to other industries, such as the business landscape.
