Satya Nadella, CEO and chair of Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), revealed that the company planned to invest $1.3 billion in improving artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and initiatives focused on promoting AI and digital skills.
Speaking at the Microsoft AI Tour in Mexico, Nadella explained that part of the funds would be allocated to the AI National Skills program, which focuses on democratizing access to artificial intelligence skills. The investment will also encourage the adoption of AI by businesses to help speed up their digital transformation while also improving connectivity.
The multinational tech company recognizes the role artificial intelligence plays as a catalyst for economic and social growth, and is currently focused on expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure in Mexico, where it held this year’s tour. Having been in Mexico for more than three decades, Microsoft plans to begin its expansion by encouraging innovation and increasing local computing capacity.
In his keynote, Nadella noted that investments in AI skilling and infrastructure in the country would help ensure organizations and individuals realized the benefits of the tech shift.
Microsoft Mexico GM Rafael Sánchez Loza stated that this investment would empower individuals, companies and society to increase access to cutting-edge tech, and help the company to meet its sustainability goals.
The multinational tech company notes that artificial intelligence possesses the transformative capability to improve human productivity, solve societal issues, make companies more competitive, and expand economic and social opportunities.
The new infrastructure will operate under AI Access Principles, which were developed to foster healthy competition and innovation in the growing AI economy. These principles reflect the company’s expanding responsibility and role as a leader, while also committing it to developing programs that ensure access to its AI tech, which empowers individuals and organizations alike.
Already, some education institutions and companies in Mexico have successfully adopted AI. They include Cemex, Tecnológico de Monterrey and Grupo Bimbo.
Cemex has implemented AI solutions offered by Microsoft to improve operational efficiency and productivity. It also introduced Technical Xpert, which helped transform key business areas such as sales and supply chain.
Tec de Monterrey recently developed Tecgpt, a platform focused on increasing productivity and efficiency as well as improving the learning process for teachers, and students, among others.
In addition to investing in the application of artificial intelligence in Mexico, Microsoft also plans to increase access to sanitation solutions and clean water via its water replenishment projects. The company also recently entered into an agreement with the Next 150, which will see it eliminate up to 95,000 tons of CO2 from a project in Guanajuato. This move is in line with its objective of becoming carbon negative by 2030.
