Open source large language models developed by Meta dubbed Llama are increasingly being used by developers, entrepreneurs, and researchers. Meta recently announced that it would be making Llama available to American government agencies, including national security and defense agencies as well as private sector partners that support their work.
The ability of large language models to come up with usable insights, reason, and process significant amounts of data can support various aspects of national security and safety in the United States.
Meta will collaborate with various firms, including IBM, Accenture Federal Services, Snowflake, Scale AI, Anduril, Amazon Web Services, Palantir, Booz Allen, Oracle, Databricks, Microsoft, Leidos, Deloitte, and Lockheed Martin, to make these models available to federal agencies.
For instance, Lockheed Martin has integrated Llama into its artificial intelligence factory, accelerating different use cases like data analysis and the generation of code. Scale AI is also calibrating the models to support certain missions conducted by national security teams, like identifying the vulnerabilities an adversary possesses.
On the other hand, Oracle is focused on building on the models to combine maintenance documents for faster repair time of aircraft and more accurate and quick problem diagnoses.
The use of open source artificial intelligence models in ethical and responsible ways like the above will not only support the security and prosperity of America but also establish the country in the race for leadership in this burgeoning space. These models can also boost the country’s cyber defenses, track terrorist funding, or streamline complex planning and logistics.
Already, open source systems have aided in the development of international standards for new technology while also helping America build a technologically advanced military. This is in addition to improving communication between different systems, picking out security vulnerabilities, and accelerating research concerning defense.
Further, open source artificial intelligence enables breakthroughs and discoveries in the public sector, aiding in the improvement of public service delivery and driving efficiency.
America isn’t the only country adopting the use of AI in national security either. Other countries like China are also developing AI tools for military applications using open source models. It was recently revealed that three research institutions in the East Asian country had used an earlier version of Meta’s Llama model to develop an artificial intelligence tool for possible military applications.
The tool, christened ChatBIT, has been designed for dialogue and answering questions in the military field.
Meta remains committed to supporting the economic prosperity, security, and safety of the United States. As open source AI gains traction and becomes the industry norm, it may be difficult to predict the blitz of innovations that entities like Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) will spawn in their bid to address various customer needs.
