Bill Gates is calling for a more measured approach to AI while committing substantial funding to help ensure the technology reaches communities that have so far gained little from its rapid development.
The Gates Foundation said last Monday that it will invest $1 billion during the next two years in projects designed to broaden access to AI, particularly in poorer communities. The announcement came as concerns continue to grow over the technology’s economic, social, and security implications.
According to the foundation’s latest Goalkeepers Report, the money will be directed toward efforts including developing AI systems that understand more local languages, strengthening digital learning tools, and applying the technology to challenges in healthcare and farming.
The report warned that access to useful AI remains heavily concentrated among English-speaking populations. It estimated that roughly a billion people are already benefiting from increasingly capable systems, while about 7 billion people have limited access to comparable tools.
Language remains one significant barrier. Speech-recognition technology, for instance, reportedly makes errors in fewer than 6% of English-language cases, while its error rate is more than ten times higher for Yoruba, a major West African language.
Gates has proposed several priorities for narrowing these disparities. He argues that developers should spend the next year and a half making AI more effective across a wider range of languages and ensuring systems reflect information from the communities where they are deployed. He also said investment should help people determine how the technology can address local needs.
The foundation’s funding will be divided among several sectors. Education will receive 40%, with another 40% allocated to healthcare. Agriculture projects will receive 10%, while the remaining 10% will go toward digital initiatives, including efforts to increase language resources available to AI developers.
Gates has also joined calls for greater caution in the pace of AI development. His comments followed warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, whose resignation statement about increasingly powerful AI systems attracted widespread attention online. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently advocated slowing development.
Gates said a slower expansion could provide communities, governments, and researchers with additional time to address potential harms and establish safeguards.
He has previously warned that AI could significantly disrupt sectors ranging from medicine and legal services to manufacturing, customer support, and software development.
