Earlier this week, Couchbase launched a set of new services focused on making it faster and easier for customers to develop generative artificial intelligence applications. The services, dubbed Capella AI Services, are currently in private preview.
Couchbase is focused on allowing its consumers and in particular, developers, to use unstructured data to build artificial intelligence tools. Unstructured data like audio files, images and text currently make up over 80% of data. Its nature makes it hard to apply it in a database that houses vast amounts of data.
To structure this data and make it useful, complex processes like retrieval-augmented generation and vectorization are used.
Matt McDonough, the company’s senior VP of Product and Partners, explained that they were focused on effectively equipping developers with artificial intelligence so they could easily process data that is unstructured and make it into something worthwhile.
The suite of services includes a number of features;
- Vectorization services to automate indexing and vectorization of unstructured data stored in the Capella database.
- Services focused on cleaning unstructured data and converting it into JSON data to prep it for vectorization.
- Model services, which offers access to large language models and embedding models as well as capabilities that support retrieval-augmented generation pipelines.
It should be noted that some of these features, like conversion of unstructured documents to JSON and vector search and storage were first available as single tools. McDonough revealed that the services would be available to all sometime next year.
Other companies also continue to invest more in the development of artificial intelligence tools like agents and conversational assistants that allow users to interact with data using natural language. The last 2 years have seen interest in AI application development increase significantly, especially after the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI, which marked a huge improvement in gen-AI tech.
Given the growing interest in AI tool development, Capella AI Services offer features that are of importance and interest to consumers. Enterprise Strategy Group Senior analyst, Stephen Catanzano, explains that these services unify development tools, data processing, and artificial intelligence model hosting on one platform, thereby reducing costs, latency, and complexity.
He adds that they also enhance data governance and security while speeding up time-to-commercialization for artificial intelligence applications. Couchbase’s competitors include database specialists like MongoDB and Redis, as well as tech giants like Oracle, Microsoft, Google and AWS, who provide database platforms.
As companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) stretch the limits of what is possible using artificial intelligence and quantum computing, we are likely to see a lot more developers looking to these technologies to power their innovations targeting different industries.
