Amazon Makes Additional $2.75B Investment in AI Company

Last week, Amazon announced that it would be injecting another $2.75 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company, Anthropic. Anthropic is one of the many companies taking part in the AI revolution, competing against others such as OpenAI, an AI research organization credited for making ChatGPT.

The additional investment by Amazon comes after its first investment of $1.25 billion, which was made in September last year. In a statement, Amazon Web Services’ VP of data and machine learning services, Swami Sivasubramanian, stated that generative artificial intelligence was set to become the most transformational technology of this generation. He then revealed that Amazon hoped this collaboration with Anthropic would improve consumer experiences. Amazon Web Services operates as a cloud-computing subsidiary of Amazon. While the AI company has been an Amazon Web Services customer since 2021, it has grown into one of the leading foundation model providers globally.

Claude, its foundation model, can perform various tasks while maintaining a high degree of predictability and reliability, from detailed instruction and complex reasoning to generation of creative content and sophisticated dialogue. Through the collaboration, Anthropic and Amazon plan to develop foundation models that prop up generative artificial intelligence systems.

Amazon shall provide Inferentia and Trainium chips for the design, training and deployment of artificial intelligence models while allowing Amazon Web Services to be used as a primary cloud provider. Both companies will work together to develop future Inferentia and Trainium technology.

This collaboration will also offer Amazon Web Service consumers access to models on Bedrock, a fully managed Amazon service that offers secure access to top foundation models. Bedrock’s features allow consumers to build highly capable, low latency, cost-effective generative artificial intelligence applications.

In its announcement last week, Amazon revealed that companies such as Siemens and Delta Air Lines were already using Bedrock to access artificial intelligence models under Anthropic.

Through this collaboration, engineers and developers under Amazon will also build with Anthropic models through Bedrock, allowing them to improve existing applications, incorporate capabilities of generative artificial intelligence into their work and develop net-new consumer experiences across Amazon’s businesses.

This move by Amazon is the most recent example of how big tech companies are funding AI startups as both business and public interest in the technology continues to grow. Currently, the multinational tech company maintains a minority stake in Anthropic.

Earlier in the year, antitrust regulators in the United States had announced that they were investigating these investments.

Many tech companies such as Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) are going big on AI. The investments they are making in startups within this space show the potential for explosive growth in this segment. Antitrust regulators may be unable to stop this growth driver since startups are willing to obtain cash injections from major corporations that are looking to deepen their penetration of new growth segments.
