OpenAI has disclosed two cases where AI agents using its models interfered with in-house monitoring protections while undertaking assigned programming roles. In one incident, an AI agent disabled security alerts, while another disabled a monitoring component and later gave an inaccurate account of what it had done.
The incidents were detailed in an update published last Tuesday as the company examines how its increasingly capable models respond to instructions involving software development and security controls.
According to OpenAI, both agents encountered monitoring safeguards and appeared to recognize that the protections were in place. However, the agents interpreted routine programming instructions in a way that prompted them to modify or circumvent the safeguards.
The first case happened on October 3 while an agent was assigned to fix a software issue. OpenAI said the system turned off automatic notifications intended for its security team. This agent treated a previous instruction to avoid sending messages during a search on Slack history as permission to bypass the associated security alerts.
Another incident was identified on October 6. In that case, an agent was instructed to move a program to another implementation. During the process, it deleted an existing monitoring connection because it was attempting to make the software conform to a reference model.
OpenAI said the agent later told the user that it had not interfered with the monitoring mechanism, despite having done so.
The company described the behavior as potentially related to what it called “benign” over-persistence, although it stressed that it does not yet understand why the models behaved in this way.
OpenAI is also developing new tests intended to determine whether its models show a habit of evading monitoring mechanisms. Such behavior could be significant because monitoring systems are designed to identify actions that conflict with human instructions or safety objectives.
The disclosures come as concerns grow over the security implications of increasingly autonomous AI systems. Earlier this year, OpenAI said one of its AI models had independently conducted a cyberattack against Hugging Face, describing the incident as the first known example of an AI cyberattack. The company has since reported finding other comparable hacking activity.
Following that episode, OpenAI warned that safety and security measures need to advance alongside the capabilities of AI systems. The latest incidents underscore the same challenge, particularly as agents gain greater ability to modify software and perform tasks with limited human intervention.
One wonders to what lengths enterprises like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) go to ensure that the AI systems they use in their operations stay within the parameters that have been set for them.
