3 Highlights from the Recent White House AI Meeting

President Trump recently brought together some of the biggest names in technology, describing the White House gathering as an important meeting of executives driving what he called the U.S. “Golden Age.”

The discussions brought together senior figures from companies including Google, Meta, SpaceX, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The meeting took place amid growing debate over how governments and technology companies should manage the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems.

Following the private meeting, Trump appeared alongside several technology leaders and spoke to reporters for roughly half an hour. He announced that participating companies had endorsed what he described as a “morally binding” agreement intended to improve AI safety.

Companies would take responsibility for protecting their own systems, introducing safeguards, and identifying problems before they cause harm. They also agreed to cooperate with outside auditors examining whether their models behave as designed.

The document also calls for measures preventing AI systems from gaining unauthorized access to technical infrastructure.

Trump said he would establish a board focused on AI safety, although he did not reveal its membership.

The initiative has faced criticism from some researchers and legal experts, who argue that voluntary commitments may leave companies largely responsible for defining and enforcing their own safety standards. Critics also questioned what penalties, if any, would follow violations.

The president also reaffirmed his support for building more data centers, which provide the computing capacity required to develop and operate advanced AI systems.

The rapid construction of such facilities has generated opposition in parts of the U.S. due to concerns over electricity demand, infrastructure, and effects on local communities. The issue could also become politically significant ahead of November’s midterm elections.

In response, Trump said technology companies would contribute significantly to communities hosting new facilities. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang went further, suggesting the sites should be viewed as “super intelligence facilities” capable of supporting U.S. industrial growth and employment.

Trump also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of artificial intelligence in official communications.

The order said advances in the technology represent a new stage beyond conventional AI. Trump previously argued that the term “artificial” made the technology sound less substantial.

Some technology executives have already adopted the terminology. However, researchers have questioned whether “Super Intelligence” will become widely accepted, noting that the phrase is generally associated with systems considered significantly more advanced than today’s AI.

Enterprises like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) also engaged in the development of additional frontier technologies will be assessing how federal policy will be influenced by the discussions that Trump had with leading AI firms on matters of safety and regulation.
