World Leaders Attend AI Impact Summit Hosted by India

India this week opened the doors to one of its largest tech gatherings to date as political leaders and industry executives convened in New Delhi for a five-day summit focused on AI. The event places pressing questions at the center of discussion, including child safety and job disruption.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the AI Impact Summit, describing it as a sign of India’s growing strength in science and innovation. In a message posted on X, he said the gathering reflects the energy and capability of India’s young population and highlights the nation’s rapid technological progress.

Organizers say this is the largest edition of the summit so far. Government officials anticipate around 250,000 participants from across the technology ecosystem. Delegations include roughly 20 heads of state and more than 40 ministerial-level representatives.

However, the opening day was marred by complaints from participants about crowd management and logistical problems. Several attendees noted that they faced long waits to enter the venue and confusion after parts of the exhibition area were cleared with little notice ahead of security checks for high-profile arrivals.

The event comes at a moment when AI is reshaping industries and prompting urgent policy questions. Tools capable of generating text, images, and software code are now widely used, while more advanced systems are being applied in sectors such as climate science, defense, and medicine. Governments worldwide are grappling with how to regulate these technologies without slowing innovation.

For India, the event is also an opportunity to position itself as a link between developed economies and countries in the Global South. Officials argue that India’s experience building large digital public platforms, including nationwide payments and identity systems, demonstrates how advanced technologies can be deployed at scale while remaining affordable.

Among the expected attendees are Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and French President Emmanuel Macron, along with executives such as Google chief Sundar Pichai, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Microsoft’s Brad Smith, and AMI Labs’ Yann LeCun.

This year’s event is organized around the themes of planet, people, and progress. As with earlier summits, a binding international agreement is unlikely. Observers expect any outcome to take the form of a voluntary declaration outlining shared ambitions.

The summit series has expanded significantly since its first gathering in late 2023 in the UK, where representatives from 28 countries and the EU met to discuss safety concerns linked to emerging AI systems.

Analysts say this year’s discussions are expected to focus on setting reasonable limits without stifling innovation, along with possible announcements of increased public investment. Even so, observers note that India will need strong international partnerships if it hopes to play a leading role in shaping the global AI landscape.

While attention during this summit will focus on AI, many attendees are likely to be thinking about the next disruptive wave that is going to come from quantum computing where entities like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are investing heavily and are registering significant progress.
