NYT Reports OpenAI Suffered Breach Last Year, AI Details Were Stolen

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research organization based in San Francisco. The company rolled out its generative AI tool, called ChatGPT, in 2022. This tool was designed to generate dialogue as well as perform tasks such as language translation and content creation, among others.

A recently released report shows that in 2023, a hacker gained access to OpenAI’s internal messaging systems and stole details about the design of the company’s tech. It is said that the hacker acquired these details from online discussions where employees discussed these technologies. They, however, didn’t get into the systems where the company stores and builds its artificial intelligence.

Company executives are said to have informed employees and board members about the breach in a meeting held in April 2023. The breach had raised concerns that foreign adversaries could steal AI tech which could endanger the national security of the United States. This event also raised questions about how seriously the company was treating security.

During this meeting, executives discussed sensitive information and unanimously made the decision to not announce this news to the public because no data on partners or clients had been stolen.

Company executives didn’t regard the event as a national security threat, believing that the perpetrator was a private party with no known ties to any foreign government. Consequently, OpenAI did not notify any federal law enforcement agencies about the breach.

After this event, a technical program manager at OpenAI, Leopold Aschenbrenner, focused on making sure future artificial intelligence technologies caused no severe harm. In a recent statement, he added that the company’s security wasn’t strong enough to prevent theft of important secrets.

In May 2024, the company announced that it had disrupted several clandestine operations that sought to use its artificial intelligence models for deceptive tasks on the internet.

This move comes as the Biden administration works to launch a new approach to protect AI tech in the U.S. from Russia and China, with plans to install guardrails around advanced models such as ChatGPT. Already, companies such as Google and Anthropic include guardrails in their AI apps before allowing businesses and individuals to access them. This, they hope, will prevent parties from using these applications to cause issues or spread disinformation.

In the same month, 16 firms developing artificial intelligence tech also promised during an international meeting to safely develop the tech. This comes as regulators work to keep up with emerging risks and speedy innovation.

This breach provides a warning to other companies like Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) that are engaged in bringing cutting-edge AI technologies to market. These companies need to give extra attention to their security so hackers don’t find a way to access proprietary information.
