The European Commission has announced a major step forward in its AI strategy with the creation of six new AI factories across Europe. With this addition, the continent now has 19 such centers spread over 16 EU countries, highlighting Europe’s determination to lead in digital innovation and maintain control over its AI development.
The new centers are being established in Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Romania, and Spain. Supported by a combined investment of $578 million (€500 million) from the EU and individual governments, the centers will provide researchers, startups, and small businesses with access to supercomputers, specialized training, and expert technical support.
The expansion forms part of a wider $3 billion plan under the AI Factories & Antennas Initiative.
Each AI center serves as a central resource for companies and research teams developing advanced AI systems. They offer high-performance computing power designed specifically for AI workloads, data storage solutions, and innovation guidance.
The centers aim to close the gap between scientific research and real-world use, allowing European organizations to test, design, and roll out AI applications in areas such as cybersecurity, healthcare, renewable energy, agriculture, and manufacturing.
The Czech Republic’s AI center (CZAI) builds on the EuroHPC Karolina supercomputer and introduces an upgraded AI-optimized system called KarolAIna. Managed by IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center, the center will focus on applied AI research and skills development to keep the country closely connected to the European AI network.
Lithuania’s LitAI Factory, operated by Vilnius University and based at the LRTC VDC3 data center, aims to develop a fully AI-ready infrastructure. It will concentrate on digital health, cybersecurity, and green technology while working closely with other European AI networks.
The Netherlands’ NLAIF will connect AI research with real-world implementation. Its new AI supercomputer will handle projects involving sensitive data, such as healthcare and public safety, while ensuring compliance with EU data standards.
Poland’s Gaia AI center, managed by Cyfronet AGH, will advance research in large language models, healthcare, and space science. Meanwhile, Romania’s RO AI center will help SMEs evolve from AI users into AI innovators by offering powerful computing tools and training.
Lastly, the 1HealthAI Factory in Spain will focus on the One-Health approach, linking environmental, human, and animal health to create sustainable AI-driven solutions.
With these new additions, Europe is moving closer to its vision of becoming a global leader in trustworthy, secure, and ethical AI innovation. Since these AI factories seek to leverage cutting-edge technologies, they could present opportunities for firms like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) that are working to offer quantum computing solutions that extend the capabilities of AI.
