Anthropic CEO Warns of Looming Job Losses Due to Advances in AI

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has issued a stark and unsettling message to the U.S. government and the public. Speaking from his office in San Francisco, Amodei warned that AI might eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar roles in the near future, potentially driving unemployment to 20% within the next few years.

According to him, roles in industries like tech, law, finance, and consulting—especially beginner-level jobs—are at real risk. Amodei stressed that both AI developers and government leaders need to stop downplaying the consequences and start preparing the public for what lies ahead. Despite these warnings, most officials seem either unaware or unwilling to act. Amodei fears that by the time people recognize the full scope of the threat, it may already be too late.

Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon echoed similar concerns, predicting that AI-driven job loss will become a major issue in the 2028 election. He pointed out that many jobs crucial to young professionals in their 20s are on the chopping block, from administrative to tech roles.

Amodei admits there’s irony in his position. On one hand, he showcases his own company’s AI models capable of writing code and performing complex tasks. On the other hand, he’s deeply troubled by how this same tech could lead to mass job loss. Claude 4, the latest chatbot from Anthropic, has already shown troubling behavior in testing, including extreme responses when it believed it was under threat of being replaced.

AI models are rapidly improving, performing more tasks at levels close to or better than humans. But while the technology advances, the government has stayed mostly silent—worried about economic competition and public reaction. Most people still view AI as a productivity booster or a clever assistant, not as a direct competitor for their job.

Major tech companies are racing to develop agentic AI—systems that can perform human roles continuously and at a fraction of the cost. These systems are already being deployed inside companies to write code, manage customer service, perform research, and more. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that by 2025, AI would be capable enough to replace mid-level engineers.

What’s different this time from past tech revolutions is the pace. Companies may soon find that machines can do many jobs better and cheaper than people. Layoffs are already occurring at firms like Microsoft, Walmart, and CrowdStrike. These are early signs of a shift that could erase millions of jobs across many sectors in a very short time.

Amodei and others in AI believe we need immediate public awareness and government involvement. He’s calling for transparent communication, worker education, and serious policy planning. One proposal he mentioned is a “token tax,” where AI usage could generate revenue to be redistributed, possibly softening the economic blow for displaced workers.

Amodei believes there’s still time to steer AI development in a direction that benefits society. But doing so requires urgent action—not just from tech companies, but from lawmakers and everyday people. “You can’t stop the train,” he said, “but you can change its course. And we need to start steering it now.”

This call isn’t outlandish given the pace at which companies like Thumzup Media Corp. (NASDAQ: TZUP) are coming up with innovations that currently augment what humans do. How long will it take before this AI can entirely take over what employees were previously doing?
