Alibaba Unveils AI Designed for Use in Robotics

Alibaba recently introduced a new AI system aimed at advancing robotics, signaling the company’s growing ambitions in a sector attracting intense global interest.

The system, known as RynnBrain, is built to help machines interpret and interact with their surroundings. According to Alibaba, the model enables robots to recognize objects, understand spatial relationships, and respond appropriately in real-world environments.

In a demonstration video released by the company’s research arm, DAMO Academy, a robot is shown identifying different pieces of fruit and placing them into a basket. While the task appears straightforward, it requires sophisticated software that allows a machine to distinguish between objects, judge distance, and coordinate precise physical movements.

Robotics is part of what many in the industry call “physical AI,” a category that covers intelligent systems embedded in machines operating in the real world. This includes technologies such as autonomous vehicles, an area that Beijing has identified as strategically important as it seeks to strengthen its position in the global technology race with the U.S.

Interest in robotics has accelerated as advances in generative AI and machine learning have made it easier to train systems that interact with complex environments. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang has repeatedly highlighted the commercial potential of the field, describing it as a multitrillion-dollar opportunity.

Alibaba’s move positions it more firmly in the field. The company has already gained attention for its Qwen series of large language models, which rank among the most advanced AI systems developed in China.

The Chinese firm joins a growing list of global players investing in similar technologies. Nvidia has introduced its own suite of tools under the Cosmos label to support robotic development and deployment.

Google DeepMind is working on Gemini Robotics-ER 1.5, a system designed to bridge reasoning capabilities with physical tasks. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has also promoted his company’s humanoid robot project, Optimus, which relies on proprietary AI software.

China, in particular, has emerged as a key battleground in the race to develop humanoid machines that resemble and move like people. Several domestic manufacturers have announced plans to scale up production this year, reflecting confidence that demand will expand across industries ranging from logistics to elder care.

As with many of its previous AI releases, Alibaba plans to make RynnBrain open source, meaning developers will be able to access and use the system at no cost. The company has relied on this approach to encourage adoption of its AI platforms globally.

As the race for dominance in robotics heats up, other enterprises like Datavault AI Inc. (NASDAQ: DVLT) have opted to deepen the use of AI in audio systems and are notching commendable milestones.
