This month, David Game College plans to roll out its new course with a special twist: no teachers! This private school, which is located in London, will be teaching 20 GCSE students using virtual reality headsets and artificial intelligence (AI) platforms on their computers.
These platforms have been designed to learn what each student is good at and what they need additional help with. Once this is done, the term’s lesson plans for every student will be adapted to suit their needs. Topics students have trouble with will be tackled sooner while strong topics will be scheduled for the term’s end, so they can be revised.
The coprincipal of the school, John Dalton, stated that while there were plenty of excellent teachers out there, all humans were prone to err. Dalton explained that it was hard for people to achieve the level of accuracy and precision that artificial intelligence could, adding that these systems could help point out exactly why a child wasn’t learning more effectively. The students set to take this course will pay roughly £27,000 for the year.
One student at the college, Joseph, has been testing the AI system. He stated that teachers didn’t really know a student’s problems because they were stretched thin dealing with other students. This, he added, is what made the artificial intelligence systems a plus, because they can help one figure out issues they had while also suggesting ways to improve.
It is crucial to realize that students won’t be left by themselves during classes, because learning coaches will be present to offer support and monitor behavior. The learning coaches will also teach the subjects the system may not be good at, including sex education and art. Former Latin teacher, Alexander Vansittart, is one of the learning coaches at the college.
While some are excited about this move by the college, the thought of letting AI spearhead children’s education remains controversial for others. Retired head teacher Chris McGovern notes that while artificial intelligence does have a role to play in schools, this is a tad too far.
Already, artificial intelligence is being used in classrooms in different parts of the country, helping educators to bring subjects to life. Despite this, McGovern explains that the problem with computer screens and artificial intelligence is that it’s inert and a machine, which dehumanizes the learning process and eliminates the interactions between teachers and their pupils. He adds that it also takes away needed interpersonal skills, noting that the future will be bleak if the focus remains solely on artificial intelligence.
Many other companies, such as C3.ai Inc. (NYSE: AI) are coming up with more use cases for artificial intelligence in other domains of business, and the world can only wait to see how far these technologies revolutionize the way we have been used to doing different things.
