Alibaba Cloud recently announced the rollout of significant enhancements to its AI offerings for its global users, introducing upgraded tools, new models, and infrastructure improvements aimed at keeping pace with the rapid evolution of AI.
The announcements were made during the firm’s Spring Launch 2025 virtual event, where the focus was squarely on making scalable AI solutions more accessible, especially in the growing fields of large language models and generative AI.
Among the most notable developments is broader access to Alibaba Cloud’s in-house LLMs, particularly the Qwen series. The models are now available through its Singapore data centers and include QwQ-Plus, Qwen-Max, and QVQ-Max.
Supporting this AI expansion is an improved version of the company’s machine learning platform, PAI. The EAS within PAI has been revamped to include distributed inference functionalities. This implies that it can now more effectively handle the taxing demands of very big models, particularly those that handle long-form information and use mixture-of-expert frameworks.
One key feature added to PAI-EAS is a prefill-decode separation process that improves system throughput and reduces operating costs. For instance, when paired with the Qwen2.5-72B model, this function reportedly increases concurrent tasks by 92 percent and boosts token processing speed by 91 percent.
Moreover, the PAI-Model Gallery has expanded, now providing close to three hundred open-source models, including the most recent models from the Wan and Qwen series. The gallery comes with a no-code interface for management and deployment, making it easier for users to implement advanced models without deep technical know-how. It also includes tools for performance assessment and cost-saving techniques like model distillation.
On the data side, the company has embedded its Qwen-powered inference functionalities directly into PolarDB. This move eliminates the need to transfer data elsewhere for AI tasks, leading to faster, more secure processing—ideal for applications such as conversational agents, text analysis, and semantic search.
In addition to these infrastructure upgrades, the company introduced new software tools like AI Doc, a smart document handler that makes use of LLMs to analyze documents, extract insights, and create custom reports.
All of these advancements follow Alibaba’s earlier announcement, made in February, to invest $53 billion over the next three years into its AI and cloud infrastructure. The company now operates 87 zones across 29 global regions.
With a current market share of 4%, Alibaba Cloud is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the $330 billion global cloud market, albeit still lagging behind Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.
As the uptake of AI solutions ramps up around the world, other AI industry actors like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are likely to also deepen their penetration of the market given that the industry works synergistically.
