Anthropic Sues DoD for Blacklisting the Company

AI company Anthropic has taken legal action against the U.S. Defense Department, accusing the government of unlawfully labeling the firm a national security “supply chain risk.” The lawsuits, filed Monday in federal courts, mark the latest development in a prolonged dispute between the company and defense officials over how the military can use its advanced AI systems.

The company submitted two separate complaints, one in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and another before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Both filings challenge a decision announced by the Pentagon last week that formally categorized Anthropic as a potential supply chain threat.

According to the company, the designation threatens its ability to operate since federal contractors were instructed to end any business relationships with the firm. It argues that applying the classification to its business is unjustified and violates constitutional protections.

In its court filings, Anthropic claims the government imposed the label as retaliation for the firm’s refusal to adopt certain policy positions favored by the government. The complaint states that officials attempted to pressure the company to remove restrictions it had placed on how its AI models might be used by the military.

Over the past year, Anthropic’s primary AI system, Claude, became widely used within the Defense Department. Until recently, it was reportedly the only AI platform authorized for use within classified government networks.

Military officials have relied on the technology for a range of tasks connected to defense planning and operations. Media reports indicate that it has been used to analyze data relevant to battlefield decisions, including identifying potential targets in ongoing conflicts such as the war with Iran.

Despite the legal confrontation, Anthropic says it still intends to support national security efforts. In court documents, the company highlighted previous collaborations with defense officials to adapt its technology for specialized government needs. Executives say they remain open to further discussions with federal agencies about responsible applications of the technology.

Anthropic also contends that the government’s actions are causing lasting harm to the business. The complaint argues that the designation threatens the economic value of one of the fastest-growing private technology firms focused on building AI responsibly.

However, that claim appears to contrast somewhat with recent public remarks from CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested that the immediate business impact of the label might be limited and that the company would ultimately weather the situation.

This dispute between Anthropic and the Trump administration is likely to be of concern for entities like GlobalTech Corp. (OTC: GLTK) as it threatens to limit the freedom of tech firms to develop products adhering to preset safeguards that the developers regard as essential.
