Zoom, Tinder Use AI to Scan Irises to Confirm Users Are Human

Tinder is introducing a new identity check that relies on eye-scanning technology, part of a broader effort to address growing concerns about AI and fake online personas. The dating platform, alongside platforms such as Zoom, plans to allow users to verify themselves by scanning their irises.

Those who complete the process will receive a “proof of humanity” label displayed on their account name or profile. The system is operated by World (formerly Worldcoin), which operates under Tools for Humanity. The startup was co-founded by Sam Altman, who also leads OpenAI.

After a successful scan, users receive a unique digital code stored on their phone, referred to as a World ID.

The announcement was made during a live presentation in San Francisco. The event opened with a video montage featuring altered archival footage of well-known figures, including broadcast journalists Larry King, Walter Cronkite, and Dan Rather. The footage had been digitally modified to show them discussing the need for reliable human verification online.

Altman briefly addressed the audience following the presentation, noting that AI is rapidly expanding its presence online. He suggested that content generated by machines could soon outnumber material created by people, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between the two.

The push for stronger verification comes as platforms grapple with a rise in fraudulent accounts. Tinder has long faced issues with fake profiles, commonly referred to as bots, which are often used in scams aimed at extracting money or personal data.

Data from the Federal Trade Commission shows that romance scams cost Americans over $1 billion last year. In response, Tinder had already introduced video selfie verification, and the World ID system will serve as an additional option for users who want extra assurance.

Meanwhile, Zoom is addressing a different concern. The company has seen rising risks from deepfake videos impersonating familiar individuals. In one case in 2024, an employee in Hong Kong transferred $25 million after being deceived by highly convincing fake video calls involving colleagues. Deloitte research suggests such fraud could reach $40 billion in the United States by 2027.

World states that iris scanning offers a highly reliable method of identification due to the uniqueness of each individual’s eye pattern. The company also says the process protects user privacy, as it does not require names or addresses. So far, it reports verifying 18 million people, with hundreds of millions of uses of its ID system.

Away from the use of AI to verify that users of platforms are indeed human, many other companies like Datavault AI Inc. (NASDAQ: DVLT) are deploying this technology in other fields, such as the production of wireless sound devices.
