Just a few years ago, San Francisco was widely portrayed as a city in decline. Attention in the American tech scene appeared to be shifting toward Austin, New York, and Miami. That perception has changed sharply with the rise of artificial intelligence, which has pulled the city back into the center of global innovation.
OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT marked a turning point. It ignited global interest in AI and triggered a surge of new business creation in the region. Out of roughly 17,000 startups operating in the city, close to 2,000 now focus entirely on AI, reflecting rapid expansion in a short period.
In 2023, the city saw the creation of 342 AI startups. That number dipped slightly to 320 in 2024 and 208 in 2025, yet investment levels remained striking. Over the past year, these companies secured around $86 billion in funding.
In comparison, startups across France raised roughly $8 billion during the same period. The scale of capital flowing into San Francisco reflects the intensity of interest surrounding AI, visible even in public spaces where bold advertising messages encourage risk-taking and entrepreneurship.
At the same time, the geography of tech activity has shifted. Whereas startups once quickly relocated south to Silicon Valley, a growing share now stays in San Francisco itself. Estimates suggest that about two-thirds of AI firms are now based in the city, with the rest in the traditional tech corridor.
The influence of younger tech firms has also expanded into areas once dominated by large corporations, including the Financial District, where companies such as Coinbase, Twitch, and Uber now operate alongside established names like Salesforce. The Salesforce Tower remains the city’s most visible symbol of corporate tech power.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has moved into the former Slack headquarters, while accelerator Y Combinator relocated from Mountain View to San Francisco in 2023 after nearly two decades outside the city. Once skeptical of San Francisco, the organization now embraces its central role in startup culture.
A defining feature of this ecosystem is the rise of shared living spaces known as hacker houses. Concentrated in neighborhoods like Hayes Valley, these homes host founders working long hours on early-stage companies. One such example is the residence tied to startup 14.ai, where founders describe an intense but formative experience shaped by the Y Combinator environment.
For many participants, the city represents an unmatched opportunity. Investors and founders alike describe it as a place where ambition feels normal, and resources are easier to access. While some international entrepreneurs remain cautious about relocating permanently, few deny the appeal of building in San Francisco, especially in an era defined by AI.
As quantum computing also goes mainstream, we are likely to see many more companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) also setting up shop in San Francisco and cementing the city’s status as a tech hub.
