Governor Newsom Vetoes Groundbreaking AI Law in California

Governor Gavin Newsom has rejected an artificial intelligence (“AI”) safety measure that would have imposed regulations on AI in California. This is a welcome decision for many, particularly major tech companies that had opposed its passage strongly. Newsom explained that the measure could cause AI developers to move out of California while also stifling innovation. The measure’s author, Senator Scott Wiener, argued that the veto permitted companies to carry on with the development of powerful tech with no government oversight. He explained that the decision also left AI companies with no binding restrictions from policymakers in the country. The legislation…

UK Police Start Testing AI Tool Capable of Collapsing Time During Detective Work

A recently developed artificial intelligence (AI) tool may help law enforcement carry out decades of detective work in hours. The tool, called the Soze tool, was developed in Australia. It has been designed to review financial transactions, video footage, emails, social media and other documents all at the same time. One assessment demonstrated that this tool was able to analyze evidential material in 27 complex cases in 30 hours. In comparison, this same work could take a human more than eight decades to complete. Somerset and Avon police in the United Kingdom (UK) have been testing the technology, with hopes…

AI Models Beat Human Researchers at Generating Original Ideas

A large language model (LLM) is a learning algorithm that can carry out tasks associated with natural language processing. Various studies have been examining how these models can be used to automate research tasks, with some looking into whether they can generate new ideas at a level similar to humans. Now, a recently posted preprint shows that an idea generator powered by AI produced more original ideas for research than 50 researchers who were working independently. The project was carried out over a one-year period. The objective was to evaluate if LLMs could come up with innovative ideas. For their…

AI Helping to Protect Journalists in Venezuela

Venezuela Retweets is an anchored news show powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which was created by media organizations. The show has two presenters, vaguely referred to as La Chama (the Girl) and El Pana (the Dude). While the presenters aren’t real, the content they present is high quality, verified and created by actual journalists. The use of artificial intelligence in this way is innovative, especially considering that in other parts of the world AI is viewed as a threat to livelihoods. Carlos Eduardo Huertas, a media operator who helped launch the show, stated that the objective wasn’t to replace but…

Researchers Build Virtual Brain Network Based on Fruit Fly’s Brain

Researchers have developed a brain network that can forecast how individual neurons behave in the brain of a living organism. The model is based on the visual system of a fruit fly, affording researchers a way to test ideas prior to investing in experiments that involve other lab animals. This feat was realized after more than 10 years of intense study on the structure and composition of the brain of a fruit fly. Most of this research was funded and conducted by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which generated maps that demonstrate every connection and neuron in the brain of…

UN Chief Warns of Democracy’s Vulnerability to Unchecked AI

During the International Day of Democracy, UN Secretary-General António Guterres discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) could undermine democratic systems by distorting public opinion through generating deepfakes, fueling hate speech and spreading disinformation. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, civil liberties and free speech while protecting human rights, noting that these values and rights were under fire. He argued that as civil spaces were shrinking and freedoms being eroded, mistrust would only increase. Guterres added that while there were dangers that arose with the use of AI, this tech could also play a positive role in strengthening…
