Why Chinese AI Models are Making Inroads into the US

Chinese AI companies are making significant inroads into the U.S., with their latest models attracting growing interest from developers, businesses, and technology professionals seeking lower costs without sacrificing performance. 

Among those embracing the new generation of Chinese AI tools is Mozilla’s chief technology officer Raffi Krikorian. Shortly after Moonshot released its Kimi K3 model, Krikorian began relying on it for many everyday tasks. 

He said the chatbot feels faster than Anthropic’s premium Claude Fable model, despite costing considerably less. Before switching, he had already been using GLM-5.2 from Chinese startup Z.ai to manage emails, documents, and scheduling. 

Krikorian reflects a wider trend as more American users experiment with Chinese-developed AI systems. Crypto exchange Coinbase is among the companies adopting Chinese models in an effort to reduce operating expenses while maintaining productivity. 

The shift has unsettled some major American tech firms. However, unless Washington introduces stricter restrictions, analysts believe Chinese AI platforms will continue attracting independent developers and organizations looking for affordable alternatives. 

The growing competition comes despite longstanding U.S. efforts to curb China’s access to advanced technologies, including AI chips. The Trump administration has indicated further sanctions remain possible to safeguard U.S. intellectual property. 

Meanwhile, the administration recently accused Moonshot of building Kimi K3 using methods linked to Anthropic’s technology. Several U.S. companies have alleged Chinese developers use model distillation to replicate advanced systems, an accusation Chinese officials dismiss. 

China’s rapid progress demonstrates how quickly the global AI race has evolved since DeepSeek surprised the industry last year with a high-performing yet inexpensive model. Since then, firms including Z.ai, Moonshot, Alibaba, and DeepSeek have introduced increasingly capable systems that experts say are approaching the performance of leading products from OpenAI and Anthropic. 

Goldman Sachs recently described Chinese AI as reaching an important stage for broader adoption, particularly as demand rises for AI agents capable of completing complex, multi-step assignments. Since providers typically charge by the number of processed tokens, lower-priced models become increasingly attractive for organizations running large workloads. 

Experts say Chinese systems perform nearly as well for programming and research while costing only a fraction of premium American services. That price gap is encouraging many businesses to reconsider which platforms best meet their needs. 

Usage figures highlight the momentum. Data from OpenRouter showed Chinese models occupied the top five positions on its platform during the past month. Market intelligence company Sensor Tower estimated Kimi recorded over 930,000 downloads in the week following its July launch, including around 86,000 in the U.S. Demand became so intense that Moonshot temporarily paused new subscriptions while expanding capacity. 

Even so, specialists caution that leading American AI systems still maintain an overall edge in capability. Arena chief executive Anastasios Angelopoulos said Chinese models remain highly competitive but have not yet surpassed the strongest U.S. offerings. Other analysts note that American companies are responding by introducing lower-cost versions of their products. 

A major advantage for many Chinese developers is their commitment to open-source software, allowing anyone to inspect, modify, and improve their models. By contrast, most flagship AI systems from OpenAI and Anthropic remain closed. 

Researchers believe this openness could accelerate global adoption, particularly as Chinese tech firms expand internationally with strong domestic backing and fresh investment. As competition intensifies on both sides of the Pacific, affordability, accessibility, and innovation are increasingly shaping the next phase of the global AI contest.
