White House, Anthropic Meet as Concerns Over Mythos AI Grow

The White House has described a recent meeting with the leader of AI company Anthropic as “constructive and productive,” signaling a possible shift in tone between the federal government and a firm currently locked in a legal dispute with the Defense Department.

The meeting took place just days after the company introduced a preview of its new system, Claude Mythos, which it says can surpass human performance in certain cybersecurity and hacking-related tasks.

According to reports, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei met with the Treasury secretary and the White House chief of staff. The timing is notable, as the administration had criticized Anthropic earlier this year, portraying it as politically extreme.

Claude Mythos has been shared with a limited number of organizations so far. Early assessments from researchers suggest the system is highly effective in identifying vulnerabilities within complex software. The company has said the tool can detect flaws in older codebases and independently determine how those weaknesses could be exploited.

Amodei indicated last week that his team had already engaged with multiple branches of the government and expressed willingness to collaborate. The recent meeting reinforces that outreach, hinting that the technology may hold strategic importance despite ongoing tensions.

The White House said the talks focused on potential areas of cooperation and methods to manage risks linked to rapidly advancing AI systems. Officials also discussed how to encourage innovation while maintaining safeguards.

The dialogue comes despite a strained relationship between Anthropic and the Defense Department. The conflict escalated in March when Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the department and other agencies after being labeled a “supply chain risk.”

The designation, which had not previously been publicly applied to a U.S. firm, effectively signaled that the firm’s technology was considered unsuitable for government use due to security concerns.

The company claims Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took the step after it refused to give the military unrestricted access to its AI tools, citing concerns about potential misuse, including surveillance and autonomous weapons.

A California federal court has largely supported Anthropic’s position, though an appeals court declined to suspend the designation while the case proceeds. Despite the dispute, court documents indicate that several government agencies have continued using Anthropic’s technology.

Until recently, the administration had offered little positive commentary about Anthropic. President Trump previously directed agencies to cease working with the firm and criticized its leadership in blunt terms on social media. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said he was unaware of Amodei’s visit to the White House.

AI is advancing rapidly, and we are likely to see more interactions between the White House and major tech companies. With firms like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) showing how this technology can enhance various products and solutions, policymakers have no choice but to respond in one way or the other.
