Wheelchair Users Can Now Walk Again, Thanks to AI

As someone who lost her mobility after a spinal stroke, Caroline Laubach uses a wheelchair full-time. But when she steps into the new AI-powered exoskeleton developed by Wandercraft, she experiences a freedom that goes beyond walking. It enables her to maintain eye contact with others, engage in more natural interactions, and experience a greater sense of inclusion in her daily life.

According to Laubach, one of the most powerful aspects of the exoskeleton is its potential to be inclusive for people with different types of disabilities. She sees a future where the device becomes a regular part of everyday life for many people who currently rely on wheelchairs.

Her experience captures what Wandercraft is aiming to achieve: to restore upright movement and independence to people with limited mobility.

The inspiration behind the company comes from a very personal place. Nicolas Simon, one of the co-founders, watched his family struggle with the effects of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a genetic disorder that impacts mobility. This personal connection drove him to use his background in robotics to develop a practical solution that could help people walk again. Together with Jean-Louis Constanza and Matthieu Masselin—both of whom also had personal reasons for joining the mission—Simon co-founded the company in 2012.

Their early work led to the creation of Atalante X, an advanced exoskeleton now used in over 100 hospitals and rehab facilities across the globe. The device, which has received regulatory approval in both the U.S. and Europe, helps patients collectively take more than a million steps every month as part of their recovery.

Wandercraft is currently testing a new prototype—the Personal Exoskeleton—to go beyond the clinical setting. Unlike previous versions, the exoskeleton is meant for real-world use: at work, at home, or out in public. It’s powered by NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence, which allows the device to adapt instantly to a person’s movements. It works on various surfaces and is operated using a joystick. This makes it accessible to people with different needs.

Wandercraft also collaborates with NVIDIA to simulate and refine the exoskeleton in virtual environments using Isaac Sim, a powerful testing platform. They’re exploring how edge computing and robotics can improve the device’s response time and adaptability.

The goal is to make the exoskeleton move fast and naturally enough to handle everyday challenges—walking at regular speed, navigating curbs, or climbing stairs. The team is pushing for FDA approval in the U.S. and aiming to get it covered by Medicare, opening the door for widespread access. Clinical trials are ongoing, and Wandercraft is actively seeking more participants to help bring the technology to market.

Such real-world uses of AI exemplify the extent to which many tech companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) have the potential to push the limits of what was considered possible in many industries.
