What Job Seekers Can Do as AI Becomes More Pervasive

AI has become part of everyday life, showing up in everything from digital assistants like Siri and Alexa to online ads and chatbots. The same is true in the job market, where AI now plays a major role in how people apply for work and how companies select candidates.

Career expert Jonathan Javier explains that AI can be both a useful resource and a challenge for people searching for work. According to him, whether AI works as a help or a hurdle depends largely on how it’s used. He explains that those who embrace modern tools gain an edge, while people who rely only on old job-hunting methods may struggle.

One area where AI is making a real impact is résumé and cover letter creation. Instead of starting from scratch, candidates can now use tools like JobBoardAI or ResumAI to tailor applications for specific openings. This levels the playing field for people who may not have access to traditional coaching resources.

Employers, too, are embracing AI. Many companies now rely on AI to conduct first-round screenings, with candidates speaking to a system rather than a recruiter. A survey conducted in late 2024 by Resume Builder revealed that about 80% of companies use AI to evaluate applicants. While this saves businesses time, applicants often walk away uncertain about how they performed.

On the other hand, AI is also making it easier for job seekers to find roles that truly match their skills. Instead of applying broadly, candidates can now target quality roles, while companies benefit from a stronger pool of applicants.

Despite its advantages, AI has also stirred concerns. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 52% of workers in the U.S. worry about AI’s future impact on jobs, with about 30% fearing fewer opportunities.

Javier reassures job seekers that AI is not meant to replace them but urges them to adapt. Learning how to incorporate AI into resumes, interview prep, and even online networking is now essential.

He recommends approaching AI as an assistant, not a replacement. Use it to draft cover letters and résumés, but always edit them to add personal context and your own voice. For AI-led interviews, practice beforehand so your story comes across clearly.

He also recommends building a strong, authentic online presence as many employers are now scanning social media and personal websites with AI tools. Lastly, he urges job seekers to focus on applying to fewer but more relevant jobs, tailoring each application rather than sending out dozens of generic ones.

Javier stresses that this is not the first time technology has changed hiring. While it may feel unsettling, those who learn to work alongside AI rather than against it will have the strongest advantage in today’s job market.

As tech companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) continue to push the boundaries of cutting-edge technology, we can expect the job landscape to be altered even more by these emerging technologies.
