The General Services Administration (GSA) is introducing a new artificial intelligence tool to assist its employees in their daily tasks.
A GSA representative shared that development on the AI tool began 18 months ago during the Biden administration, with a strong focus on privacy and security. Concerns over the risks associated with commercial AI tools led the agency to develop its own system in-house, ensuring it aligns with government security standards.
Currently, GSA is testing how the tool integrates into daily workflows, allowing but not mandating employees to use it. The agency plans to expand its use across other federal departments in the future.
The AI system utilizes multiple large language models (LLMs), including technologies from Meta and Anthropic. It functions similarly to other chatbots, providing responses to prompts and assisting staff with routine tasks such as writing.
The GSA representative noted that the AI tool is not designed to make official decisions. Its models operate separately from GSA’s internal knowledge bases, and safeguards are in place to prevent the sharing of personal or sensitive information. While conversations with the chatbot are not classified as federal records, interactions are being logged for monitoring and improvement purposes.
Stephen Ehikian, GSA’s Acting Administrator, highlighted the potential of generative AI in government work, likening it to the impact of personal computers on the workforce. He noted that while this is just the beginning, there is significant demand for the technology across the agency as well as other government agencies.
The Trump administration has shown support for GSA’s AI initiative, according to the representative. While the tool is still in its early stages, its introduction within GSA is expected to generate feedback that will help refine its capabilities and accelerate deployment to other government agencies.
The tool is being deployed amid significant workforce reductions and the discontinuation of services such as 18F. Additionally, the White House has positioned GSA as the central agency for federal acquisitions related to common services and goods.
Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and is a key Trump adviser, has emphasized AI as a means to enhance government efficiency.
DOGE was reportedly considering an AI system to assess federal employees’ responses to emails requesting justification for their roles. However, Musk denied that AI was evaluating the replies, stating that the intent was simply to confirm employees were responsive.
Major players in the AI space, such as Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) are likely to welcome the news that the federal government is taking the step of developing its own AI system for use by its employees. This is a vote of confidence in the utility of these technologies.
