The U.S. is preparing to welcome China to Washington as the two nations face a wide-ranging agenda that includes AI, trade, and other major economic matters. President Trump will be receiving China President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews. The decision is notable, as Trump generally receives visiting heads of state at the White House.
The visit will feature several formal events, including an official welcome ceremony and state dinner. A number of chief executives from major technology companies are expected to attend the dinner. The presidents are also expected to hold private discussions away from the public spotlight.
Ahead of the meetings, U.S. officials indicated that Washington and Beijing could consider reducing tariffs on selected goods that are not viewed as strategically important. Such an arrangement could lower some trade barriers between the world’s two largest economies.
Rare earth elements are expected to feature prominently in the negotiations. China controls a significant portion of the global supply of these minerals, which are used in products ranging from smartphones to advanced military equipment. Officials have signaled that national security considerations will continue to limit any decision to relax U.S. restrictions involving strategic materials and technology.
AI is a central issue for the administration. Trump has repeatedly stressed the importance of keeping the U.S. at the forefront of the rapidly developing industry, which has become an important area of competition between Washington and Beijing.
During remarks from the Oval Office last week, Trump described relations with China and Xi as positive while emphasizing the economic leverage he believes the United States retains.
The diplomatic discussions extend beyond the presidential meeting. U.S. Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are also scheduled to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Their talks are also expected to cover China’s reserves of rare minerals and AI.
Trump has separately outlined plans for a new federal initiative focused on AI. In a social media post, he compared the proposed “AI Force” with the Space Force and said he intended to select an AI czar.
Trump said the official would be chosen in the near future and suggested the position would require exceptional technical ability. He also argued that AI could have an economic impact far greater than earlier technological transformations. He added that the U.S. currently holds an advantage over China in AI and that maintaining that position is a priority.
Tech firms like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) are likely to follow the summit of these two world leaders and see what agreements are reached, especially on AI.
