Tech Innovators Start Pivoting to World AI Models

After nearly a decade focused on large language models (LLMs), computer scientist Louis Castricato concluded that the field had reached a stage where groundbreaking advances were becoming harder to find.

Castricato, who spent eight years researching the technology that powers conversational AI systems such as Claude and ChatGPT, said he increasingly felt that the most significant discoveries had already been made. In his view, much of the current work centers on finding practical uses for existing systems rather than developing entirely new foundations.

That realization led him to leave his doctoral program at Brown University and launch a startup called Overworld. The company’s goal is to create systems capable of understanding and operating within real-world environments instead of simply processing language.

While major AI firms continue attracting enormous investment for chatbot tech, a growing group of researchers and entrepreneurs is looking beyond text-based systems. Their focus is on “world models,” a category of AI designed to interpret surroundings, anticipate outcomes, and interact more effectively with physical spaces.

Among the advocates of this approach is renowned researcher Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the “Godmother of AI.” Li has described world models as one of the field’s most significant and frequently debated concepts. Her startup, World Labs, is exploring how machines can develop a richer understanding of the environments around them.

In a recent essay, Li argued that AI systems must also grasp how the physical world functions. Unlike language models, which, she said, learn patterns from text, world models attempt to understand relationships involving space, motion, perspective, lighting, and the laws governing physical interactions.

Another prominent supporter is AI researcher Yann LeCun, who left his position as chief AI scientist at Meta to establish Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs in Paris. Speaking recently on the “Unsupervised Learning” podcast, LeCun noted that the term “world model” is increasingly common in industry discussions. He described the concept as a framework that allows AI systems to anticipate the results of their own actions.

Definitions of world models vary, often depending on the intended application. Some researchers envision smarter robots, while others see opportunities in interactive entertainment and digital simulations.

The rise of generative AI has already transformed many office tasks and creative professions by training systems on vast collections of books, articles, images, and videos. Yet critics argue that predicting the next word, image element, or line of code has limitations.

Martial Hebert, dean of Carnegie Mellon University’s computer science school, points to simple physical tasks as evidence. Picking up a coffee mug, he said, requires understanding movement, geometry, touch, and the behavior of objects. Such challenges highlight the complexity of the real world and explain why many researchers believe the next stage of AI development must extend beyond language alone.

Another technology frontier that is advancing rapidly is quantum computing. The work being done by entities like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) promises to revolutionize computing to such a high degree that governments are already concerned about upgrading cybersecurity systems in anticipation of widespread quantum computing improvements. One can only imagine the changes that could happen when AI is paired with quantum computing.
