South Korea Outlaws Downloading DeepSeek Apps, Cites Privacy Concerns

South Korea has halted new DeepSeek AI chatbot downloads, as confirmed by the country’s data protection authority. The chatbot will remain unavailable until necessary adjustments are made to comply with South Korea’s data privacy laws.

Following its international debut, DeepSeek quickly gained traction in the nation, soaring to the top and amassing more than a million active users in just a week. However, its sudden rise also led to increased scrutiny, prompting restrictions in various countries due to concerns over national security and data privacy.

According to Korea’s Personal Information Protection Agency, the app was removed from both Google Play and the Apple App Store on Saturday. The decision followed internal government measures that prohibited employees in several state agencies from installing the app on their office devices.

While new downloads have been blocked, individuals who had already installed the app can still use it, and the chatbot remains accessible through DeepSeek’s official website.

DeepSeek gained global attention in the tech industry, financial markets, and AI leadership discussions upon launching its latest application in January. Its rapid growth as one of the most widely used chatbots worldwide has sparked regulatory concerns in multiple countries.

Meanwhile, data protection agencies in Ireland and France have sought clarification on how DeepSeek processes user data, particularly whether personal information is stored on Chinese servers, as outlined in its privacy policies. Like other generative AI systems, DeepSeek reportedly collects details such as birth dates and email addresses and may use user input to enhance its algorithms.

In the United States, legislators have proposed legislation to prohibit DeepSeek from being installed on federal government devices due to security concerns. State governments including Virginia, New York, and Texas have already implemented similar restrictions for their staff.

DeepSeek’s advanced LLM has demonstrated reasoning abilities comparable to American AI systems like OpenAI’s models. However, it reportedly operates at almost half the cost required to develop and maintain such technology in the U.S. and other nations.
