Rivian Reveals Its Plans for AI-Powered Autonomous Vehicles

Rivian is taking a more hands-on role in the future of vehicle autonomy, with plans to design and manufacture its own silicon chips as part of a broader push toward AI-driven driving systems. The strategy was outlined on December 11 by Chief Executive RJ Scaringe during the company’s first Autonomy and AI Day, held at its headquarters in Palo Alto. 

A key part of Rivian’s roadmap is the shift to a proprietary silicon chip designed for vision-focused physical AI. Vidya Rajagopalan, senior VP of electrical hardware, said building custom silicon chips allows the company to move faster while improving efficiency and lowering long-term costs. 

The company’s first custom chip—the Rivian Autonomy Processor 1, or RAP1—is built using five-nanometer technology and combines memory and processing in a single multi-chip module. RAP1 serves as the foundation for Rivian’s third-gen autonomy computer, the Autonomy Compute Module 3. 

Rivian says the system can deliver up to 1,600 trillion INT8 operations per second and process five billion pixels every second. The design also supports chip-to-chip connectivity through a low-latency interconnect and relies on internally developed AI compiler software. 

Looking ahead, the company also plans to add lidar sensors to future R2 vehicles, complementing cameras and radar to provide detailed three-dimensional awareness and added redundancy in challenging driving scenarios. The third-generation hardware platform, including the new compute module and lidar, is currently being tested and is expected to appear in R2 models starting in late 2026. 

In the near term, Rivian plans to expand driver assistance features through software updates. Scaringe said an over-the-air update arriving later this month will significantly increase the range of roads where hands-free driving is available, growing coverage from under 150,000 miles to over 3.5 million miles across North America. 

Next year, the company plans to introduce point-to-point automated driving, followed by more advanced features such as eyes-off operation and eventually Level 4 autonomy for personal vehicles. 

The company also announced plans for an autonomy subscription called Autonomy+, set to launch in 2026. Pricing will include a one-time fee of $2,500 or a monthly option priced at $49.99. 

Beyond driving automation, Rivian is applying AI across its operations through a system it calls Rivian Unified Intelligence. The platform supports everything from predictive maintenance to new in-vehicle features. One of the most visible outcomes will be the Rivian Assistant, a new voice interface scheduled to arrive in 2026 on first- and second-generation R1 vehicles.
