OpenAI Expresses Interest in Buying Google Chrome

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has shown interest in acquiring Chrome—the world’s most widely used web browser—if Google were ever required to sell it. Nick Turley, a senior OpenAI executive, revealed this during testimony supporting the U.S. government’s antitrust case against Google.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argues that Google has an unfair hold over the online search market and is pushing for the company to be broken apart. Google, on the other hand, insists that Chrome is not on sale and is seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed.

According to data from analytics firm Similarweb, Chrome currently accounts for about 64% of internet users. Apple’s Safari comes in second, used by roughly 21% of users.

Turley’s appearance at the Washington, D.C. trial is part of a broader effort by the DOJ to challenge the power held by major tech companies in areas like AI, social media, and search engines. The court ruled last year that Google maintained a monopoly in search. More recently, it was found guilty of holding an illegal monopoly in online advertising. Google has said it plans to fight both rulings through appeals.

Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google’s head of regulatory relations, stated in a company blog post that the government’s plans would harm consumers, weaken the economy, and damage America’s tech leadership.

The current proceedings are focused on finding ways to limit Google’s dominance in search, especially as new AI tools change how people find information online. These AI systems tap into online data to provide more accurate answers and to minimize errors that have plagued chatbot developers.

Turley also revealed that OpenAI had proposed a collaboration with Google last year, which would have allowed Google’s search results to be used inside ChatGPT. However, according to Turley’s testimony, Google declined the offer.

Currently, OpenAI works closely with Microsoft, which owns Bing and Edge. Google is pushing forward with its own AI developments, including Gemini, a platform designed to compete directly with ChatGPT.

The antitrust trial is set to continue for three weeks. Other tech giants such as Apple, Meta, and Amazon are closely following the outcome, as they are also facing similar legal challenges.

In a separate development, OpenAI is reportedly exploring the idea of launching a social networking platform. According to The Verge, the project is still at an early stage, but CEO Sam Altman has reportedly been gathering private feedback on the concept, which could eventually rival Elon Musk’s platform, X.

Altman and Musk were once collaborators at OpenAI, but their relationship soured years ago due to disagreements over the company’s future. Meanwhile, Musk’s X now features its own AI system called Grok, integrated directly into the social media site.
