Microsoft Expects to Inject $80bn into its AI Projects This Fiscal Year

Microsoft President and Vice Chair Brad Smith revealed on Friday that the company is set to allocate approximately $80 billion toward artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives during the 2025 fiscal year. Smith noted that AI has the potential to revolutionize nearly every facet of life, stressing the importance of the U.S. taking a leadership role in the development and deployment of this transformative technology.

“Artificial intelligence is, in many respects, the electricity of the modern era. The decisions made in the next four years can lay the groundwork for America’s economic prosperity over the next 25 years,” Smith stated.

He highlighted that the U.S. is well-positioned to lead this wave of innovation, provided it leverages its current strengths and forges effective international partnerships. To support this vision, Smith urged Congress and the incoming president, Donald Trump, to prioritize AI advancements by increasing investments in research through institutions like the National Science Foundation and universities.

The U.S. and China are competing to make their AI systems the norm worldwide, Smith said. He pointed out that early adoption offers significant benefits and the unique characteristics of technology markets fuel this competitiveness.

“The country that moves first and fastest in this race will likely secure a dominant position,” Smith explained. “The U.S. needs a strategic international approach to accelerate the adoption of American AI technology worldwide.”

Smith pointed out that China has already begun offering developing nations subsidized access to crucial computer chips and assistance in creating AI data centers. He described this as a calculated effort by China to ensure these countries remain reliant on its AI platforms in the long term.

“The Chinese government understands that once a nation adopts its AI system, it is likely to stick with that platform moving forward,” Smith added.

To counter this, Smith advised that the United States must act swiftly to position its AI technology as more reliable and advanced, enlisting the support of allied nations in this endeavor.

Microsoft aims to channel roughly $80 billion in 2025 into building Artificial Intelligence datacenters, deploying cloud-based AI apps, and training advanced models. The company’s fiscal year 2025 will conclude at the end of June.

Other tech giants, including Open AI, Amazon, and Google are also investing billions in AI development. However, the timeline for when these investments will yield significant financial returns remains uncertain.

This huge budget for AI development at Microsoft suggests that other AI companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are also spending considerable amounts of money to develop cutting-edge tech products for the market.
