The U.S. Labor Department has entered into a formal agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at strengthening workforce preparation in the field of AI. The partnership, outlined in a newly signed memorandum of understanding, focuses on expanding access to AI-related tools, training, and education across the country.
At the center of the collaboration is the TechAccess: AI-Ready America program, a nationwide effort led by the NSF. Alongside the agreement, the foundation also announced plans to allocate up to $224 million to support the creation of as many as 56 coordination hubs across states and territories. The hubs are intended to promote readiness for AI adoption at the local and regional levels.
The TechAccess initiative brings together multiple federal partners, including the Agriculture and Labor Departments, as well as the Small Business Administration (SBA).
Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said the program is intended to ensure that workers nationwide can access the tools and education needed to succeed in a changing economy. She emphasized that the initiative will help businesses adopt new technologies while creating opportunities for workers to advance their careers.
Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling highlighted the importance of integrating AI readiness efforts into existing workforce and education systems. He noted that aligning regional initiatives with national training networks will help improve outcomes and expand access to opportunities tied to technological advancement.
Brian Stone, NSF acting director, described the agreement as a reflection of a shared commitment across federal agencies. He said the initiative will help expand pathways into AI-related careers, improve access to training, and support communities as they adapt to changes in the labor market.
As part of its role, the Labor Department plans to connect the new coordination hubs with established workforce programs. These include American Job Centers, registered apprenticeship programs, and other training initiatives focused on developing AI-related competencies. The department will also draw on its Workforce Hub and AI Literacy Framework to support the effort.
The initiative aligns with broader federal strategies aimed at preparing the workforce for technological change. These include the AI Action Plan and America’s Talent Strategy, both of which outline priorities for building skills and expanding access to education and training.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two agencies will work together on several key areas. These include developing programs that teach AI-related skills, supporting workers as they transition into new roles created by technological change, and conducting research on how artificial intelligence is reshaping economic outcomes, industries, and job requirements.
As this program starts bearing fruit, firms like Datavault AI Inc. (NASDAQ: DVLT) that leverage AI in their operations are likely to have access to a deepening pool of talent to recruit from over the coming years.
