Juna.ai Aims to Leverage AI Tools to Improve Energy Efficiency at Factories

The last few years have seen the adoption of artificial intelligence take off, with major firms like Google and OpenAI investing heavily in this technology. The use of AI agents has also grown, driven by the LLM and GenAI boom.

Unlike chatbots, artificial intelligence agents go a step further by helping individuals get things done. Juna.ai, a company focused on revolutionizing industrial processes through automation driven by artificial intelligence, plans to assist factories increase their efficiency and in turn, increase energy efficiency, maximize production output and decrease overall emissions using AI.

The start-up, which is based in Berlin, was founded in 2013 by Christian Hardenberg and Matthias Auf der Mauer. The company is focused on industries like cement, textile, steel and paper, which have large-scale production processes that consume a lot of raw materials.

Its software has been developed to integrate with production tools used by manufacturers and examine data from the machine sensors. This includes things like pressure and temperature, as well as output measurements like color, thickness and quality.

This information allows the company to train AI agents to determine the optimal settings for machinery while also generating data that can be used by operators to ensure operations are running at peak efficiency with little waste. This is a win-win situation, both for the client’s bottom line and their carbon footprint.

The company reveals that it has designed custom artificial intelligence models using open-source tools like PyTorch and TensorFlow. Juna.ai makes use of reinforcement learning to train its models, which allows them to learn via interactions with the environment. Here, the models try different actions, observe the outcomes, then improve based on the conclusions made.

In an interview, Hardenberg explained that the benefits of its platform lay in the optimization of processes to reduce waste, not in saving labor. Currently, the company’s artificial intelligence agents are customized for every client using historical data.

Juna.ai hopes that in the future, it will offer readymade pre-trained agents that don’t require a lot of training to use a client’s data.

Just over a year since it was founded, the company has several clients, all of whom are based in Germany. Thus far, it has raised over $7 million in a seed round from Norrsken VC, Kleiner Perkins, and John Doerr, the chairman of Kleiner Perkins. With clients and funding in hand, Juna.ai is now focused on expanding and growing its technical expertise.

As companies like Juna.ai focus on creating AI solutions targeting factories, other actors like Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) also have their own areas of focus, such as internet search advancements using AI technologies.
