Instagram Starts Testing an AI Agent Designed to Perform Tasks

The evolution of generative AI is moving toward intelligent AI agents—chatbot systems capable of handling tasks and executing functions on behalf of users. Unlike traditional chatbots that assist with information, AI agents have the potential to perform real-world actions by navigating digital platforms like a human user.

Major AI companies, including Anthropic and Google, are currently experimenting with autonomous agents that they envision businesses could eventually “employ” as digital workers.

OpenAI has already taken a step in this direction with its “Operator” AI app, designed to perform online activities as requested by users. The tool operates similarly to ChatGPT but with additional functionality. For example, if a user instructs it to purchase a large bag of dog food on Amazon, Operator will open a browser, access Amazon’s website, and proceed with the necessary actions to complete the purchase.

Following this trend, Meta appears to be exploring similar capabilities with an experimental task management feature within Instagram’s direct messages. The new option, labeled “Create Task,” would allow Instagram users to set up an action based on the content of a message, potentially making it easier to keep track of important reminders and follow-ups. If developed further, this tool could become an essential feature that users rely on for managing their digital interactions more efficiently.

While Instagram’s test feature ‘Create Task’ doesn’t yet match the complexity of OpenAI’s Operator, the fundamental concept is the same—advancing artificial intelligence from simple text-based responses to performing real tasks. The broader goal is to develop AI agents that don’t just chat but take action based on user commands.

However, AI-driven task execution is still in its early stages and comes with challenges. Some users have encountered issues, such as AI agents struggling to find the best deals or mistakenly placing unwanted orders. Despite these setbacks, the long-term vision is to integrate AI systems with wearable devices, such as the Ray-Ban smart glasses from Meta. In the future, users may be able to give voice commands, and AI assistants will handle tasks while considering budgets, personal preferences, and other relevant factors.

This advancement has the potential to go far beyond traditional chatbot interactions, offering a more intuitive and helpful AI experience. Though there’s still progress to be made, Instagram’s experiment with task creation suggests that AI-driven assistants are steadily evolving into more capable digital helpers.

Given the fast pace at which AI is transforming different industries, it is just a matter of time before the AI innovations of various companies like International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) become commonplace in the way businesses conduct their operations.
