Google AI’s Search Mocked for Erratic Results

The new AI search feature by Google is being criticized for offering inaccurate and unpredictable answers. For example, the experimental tool, AI Overviews, stated that geologists recommended that people consume a rock a day.

The search engine’s AI-generated responses also told users who were looking for ways to make cheese on pizza stick better to use glue that wasn’t toxic to humans. Another user who asked whether they could use gasoline to cook spaghetti quicker was told that while they couldn’t, they could use it to make a spicy dish, with the tool going as far as to generate a recipe.

Some of these responses appear to be based on posts written by the Onion, a satirical site, as well as comments on Reddit.

AI Overviews works by offering a summary of search results, which saves users time by eliminating the need for them to scroll through various sites to find the information they’re looking for. A spokesperson for the Google stated in an interview that the above were isolated examples.

In a statement, the spokesperson explained that these examples were uncommon questions and didn’t represent the experiences of most individuals. The spokesperson also insisted that the majority of the time, the feature worked well and offered high-quality information. They also noted that the company was refining its system.

Despite this assurance, Google is being mocked on social media. This comes after the company was forced to withdraw its Gemini chatbot for its responses. Prior to this, the chatbot’s forerunner, Bard, performed dismally.

It is expected that despite the criticism, the search AI will be widely used, particularly because Google is the default search engine for many globally. Data from Statcounter estimates that Google’s search engine makes up more than 90% of the global market.

Google isn’t the only company facing an issue with inaccurate answers from its generative artificial intelligence tools. However, as the largest global search engine, it gets more attention.

Other companies are also facing backlash over their efforts to introduce or add more artificial intelligence tools into their consumer products. For instance, Microsoft recently announced that it would be introducing a feature to its new PCs that would take screenshots of users’ online activity continuously.

While it isn’t clear how many searches Google’s tool did get right, these issues highlight the importance of these tools being able to handle anything that comes their way with minimal difficulty.

Even with these issues, however, many experts in the industry agree that artificial intelligence-driven searches are the future.

Social media giants that are looking to integrate more AI functionality on their platforms, such as Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META), could be watching the issues plaguing Google and taking notes on how to sidestep such hiccups.
