Elon Musk is reportedly exploring the use of artificial intelligence to manage the United States government, a move that has sparked serious concerns among experts who warn of potential risks and unintended consequences.
Through the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk has dismissed thousands of federal employees. Those still on the job reportedly must send a weekly email detailing five key tasks they completed.
The volume of these emails is overwhelming, and Musk is said to be using AI to process them, analyze employee performance, and determine who keeps their job. Reports also suggest AI could replace many government positions altogether.
The specifics of the AI systems—how they function and what role they play—remain unclear, raising concerns among Democrats in Congress. Experts warn that introducing AI into federal operations without rigorous testing and oversight could lead to serious issues.
According to law and political science professor Cary Coglianese, AI should be developed with a clear purpose, tested, and approved to be used responsibly. “Whether any of that has occurred here is unclear,” he said.
He also expressed skepticism on how AI would determine which employees to let go, pointing out the risks of errors, bias, and other unforeseen complications.
Public policy professor Shobita Parthasarathy shared the same concerns, calling the approach highly problematic. “We have no information on how the AI is making these decisions, what data it relies on, or whether it can be trusted,” she said.
Despite these warnings, the current administration appears committed to advancing AI in government, with Musk—a billionaire entrepreneur and key adviser to President Donald Trump—driving the effort.
For instance, the United States Department of State is allegedly using AI to analyze social media activity and identify foreign nationals who may support Hamas, with the intent of revoking their visas. However, officials have provided little transparency on how this technology operates.
“The current administration is aggressively pushing AI, but I want to see it used in a fair, ethical, and accountable way,” said journalism professor Hilke Schellmann. “There’s a real danger of harm going unnoticed.”
The rapid push to integrate AI into government operations, especially in sensitive areas like employment and national security, raises serious ethical and practical concerns. Without transparency and safeguards, this approach could lead to unintended and potentially dangerous outcomes.
Big Tech companies like Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) now need to fine-tune their AI offerings so that the concerns that people and government entities have about the large-scale deployment of these tools are addressed.
