Despite Existing Fears, AI Could Spur Increases in Employment Opportunities

The rapid rise of AI has sparked fears of widespread job loss and a crumbling career ladder. While AI is expected to change the nature of some roles, experts suggest it could also open up new employment opportunities for many.

Instead of simply replacing workers, AI may create demand for new responsibilities like overseeing, testing, or guiding AI systems. Some roles may require critical thinking or creativity, areas where humans still excel compared to machines.

Still, there’s a lot of uncertainty about how AI will reshape the job market. Harry Holzer, a public policy professor at Georgetown University and former chief economist at the U.S. Labor Department, notes that society still influences how AI is adopted. “We do have some control,” he stated.

Projections about how AI will affect jobs vary widely. For instance, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that entry-level jobs in the U.S. could be cut in half over the next five years. In contrast, a World Economic Forum survey of 1,000 major companies named AI as the leading source of new job growth by 2030. Their data suggested that while 92 million jobs might disappear, around 170 million new ones could be created globally in the same timeframe.

Historically, new technologies have tended to produce more jobs than they eliminate. But AI presents a unique situation, according to Ethan Mollick, author of Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with A.I.

Already, AI-focused job listings are becoming more common. Data from Glassdoor shows that postings for AI-related roles more than doubled between 2023 and 2024. That momentum has continued into 2025, with listings rising another 56% compared to the same time last year.

Analysts generally classify AI-related work into two groups. The first includes traditional roles that have added AI tasks, like software developers or lawyers working with AI applications. The second includes entirely new roles born from AI, such as freelance AI trainers who use their expertise in areas like language or math to improve AI systems. These training roles have surged more than fourfold since 2024.

However, not all AI positions are growing. Listings for “prompt engineers,” who craft queries for AI tools, are seeing a decline.

Looking ahead, the future of AI jobs is uncertain. Some analysts predict that people will be needed to review AI-generated content for accuracy. Others believe AI might become advanced enough to handle even that. Some predict generalist roles may shrink, giving way to highly specialized positions, while others worry even specialists could be at risk.

Forecasting which new jobs will come forth is challenging, according to MIT’s David Autor. “We’re better at guessing how current jobs will shift than predicting new ones,” he said.

Mollick advises workers not to make major career decisions based only on today’s AI trends. “It’s too early to know where this is going,” he said.

What is not in dispute is the fact that AI will have an impact on most, if not all, industries. Already, companies like Thumzup Media Corp. (NASDAQ: TZUP) are leveraging AI to enhance the branding and marketing efforts of businesses on social media.
