Decoding Neural Code of Brain Could Yield Superhuman AI

One specialist in artificial intelligence analysis, Eitan Michael Azoff, believes that in the future humans will engineer superior intelligence with higher speeds and capacity than our own brains. This, he notes, will happen once we get to the bottom of how the human brain encrypts sensory information and moves it to carry out cognitive tasks such as learning, thinking, internal dialogue and problem solving.

It is already known that sensory neurons respond to sensory information from one’s environment, then relays it to the rest of an individual’s nervous system.

In his recently launched book, Azoff argues that reproducing consciousness in computers is a crucial step in building artificial intelligence (“AI) that surpasses our own abilities. The book provides an interdisciplinary research survey across different branches of artificial intelligence research and neuroscience, all of which are linked to its objective of bringing research closer to building a human-level artificial intelligence system.

There are different types of consciousness, with researchers acknowledging that even simpler animals have a degree of consciousness. Azoff explains that computer simulations could help build a virtual brain that can imitate consciousness without self-awareness. An individual can experience this when they are completely focused on one task and “in the flow.’ Consciousness without self-awareness helps forecast possible events, helps animals plan their actions and helps people remember incidents from their pasts. Now, Azoff believes it could do the same for artificial intelligence.

He posits that visual thinking may play a role in learning more about what consciousness is. The artificial intelligence currently used doesn’t think in visual terms as its been designed to use large language models.

Azoff proposes that better understanding visual thinking then modelling how images are processed will play an important role in designing human-level artificial intelligence. This is because visual thinking preceded language in humans. He also gives a warning, however, noting that society needs to ensure that this tech is controlled all while preventing its misuse. In addition to this, he highlights the importance of building artificial intelligence systems with implanted behavior safety regulations.

Azoff’s new book, titled “Toward Human-Level Artificial Intelligence: How Neuroscience Can Inform the Pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence or General AI,” is on Amazon. This book may appeal to a broad audience, from AI researchers and neuroscientists to readers and investors in artificial intelligence, because it offers an introduction into the intersection of AI and neuroscience.

You can bet that major entities such as Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) could heavily invest in the quest for superhuman AI since such technology could play a major part in furthering their business interests.
