Could AI Soon Replace Teachers in Schools?

As schools reopen, many districts, families, and even the federal government are turning to AI as part of the classroom experience. However, while AI is being welcomed as a new educational tool, some experts caution that it could deepen the nation’s teacher shortage if it starts taking over responsibilities traditionally handled by educators. 

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, nearly one in three AI specialists believes teaching jobs could decrease because of the technology. The experts predict that within the next two decades, a significant share of educators might see their roles put at risk. 

The findings arrive at a time when the Learning Policy Institute projects that by 2025, roughly 12% of teaching roles will either be vacant or filled by staff without full certification. 

Educators, though, remain divided on what AI means for their profession. Educator Eric Jenkins suggested that AI might replace some routine tasks but emphasized that it should be treated as a tool, not a substitute for a real teacher. 

Similarly, Debbie Critchfield, Idaho’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, said she does not believe AI could ever take the place of teachers, calling human presence the “most important part” of education. She argued that the right use of AI can help teachers create stronger learning environments. 

Trump’s administration has encouraged K-12 students to explore AI and outlined a strategy focused on using it to complement, not replace, human work. A national AI challenge for students was recently introduced by First Lady Melania Trump, highlighting the potential for young people to design tools that improve their communities. Linda McMahon, the Education Secretary, endorsed the effort stating that AI can transform learning and prepare students for future challenges. 

Since the release of ChatGPT in 2023, school districts nationwide have been working on guidelines for using AI responsibly. Most administrators say they welcome it as long as it is used with honesty and oversight. 

While there are concerns about cheating, administrators argue that teachers can usually recognize when a student’s work suddenly changes in quality. 

Teacher shortages remain a long-standing issue, particularly in special education and STEM fields. Many educators cite workload, behavior issues, and limited support as reasons for leaving. AI advocates believe it can help alleviate some of these pressures but emphasize that authentic relationships between teachers and students are irreplaceable. 

District leaders are now focusing on training staff to use AI wisely through partnerships with universities to offer AI workshops.
