Apple Starts Rolling Out AI Features to Some iPhones

Earlier this week, Apple released its AI tools for some of its iPhones. By updating to the latest version of the firm’s operating system, individuals with eligible devices could access these features. After updating to iOS 18.1, any individual hoping to get the features will have to enter a waitlist to obtain access.

According to Apple, users will be able to activate the suite of artificial intelligence tools a few hours after entering the waitlist.

The new features include an upgraded interface for Siri, tools to help users compose messages, and notification summaries. Apple Intelligence is also available on iPad tablets and Mac computers powered by the firm’s latest chips.

These features are the first wave of artificial intelligence tools exhibited earlier in the year at the firm’s summer developer conference.

It is important to note though that wait times may vary, with only those with the latest devices being able to access the features. These are for all iPhone 16 models as well as the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Pro.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, stated that the public rollout of its artificial intelligence tools had launched a new era for its products. He added that Apple Intelligence builds on years of innovation in machine learning and artificial intelligence and afforded users a personal intelligence system that was easy to use while still protecting their privacy.

This comes just days after the firm announced that it’d reward ethical hackers who could show vulnerabilities in its AI software. The reward would add up to £770,000, which is equivalent to $1 million.

The firm expects to roll out more features later in the year, including emoji and image generation from text prompts. Other features launched included the Memories feature, which would allow users to create movies using a description they typed.

Apple isn’t the only major tech firm venturing into this new field either. Samsung and Google have already integrated artificial intelligence features into their devices. These features allow users to search for something on the internet by encircling it, organize notes automatically, and translate conversations in real-time.

Earlier in the year, Samsung made Galaxy AI features available on its newly released handsets as well as its S22 models. This comes after the South Korean tech giant announced that it was planning to roll out its AI features to over 100 million users this year.

Google also released the Magic Eraser, a tool that allowed users to remove unwanted individuals or objects from images. Apple soon rolled out a similar tool dubbed Clean Up.

As more technology companies like Palantir Technologies Inc. (NYSE: PLTR) continue their innovative efforts to expand the possibilities of what AI can do, we are likely to see these technologies in a lot more electronics and applications.
