Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of improperly obtaining confidential information through the recruitment of former Apple employees.
The technology giant alleges that the defendants participated in a coordinated effort to obtain sensitive internal information related to product development and manufacturing. According to the complaint, at least two former Apple staff members who later joined OpenAI sent company materials to themselves before leaving their positions.
Responding to the allegations, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has no desire to obtain trade secrets belonging to other businesses. He added that OpenAI is reviewing the legal filing and remains focused on developing technologies intended to benefit users worldwide.
An Apple representative said the company decided to pursue legal action after gathering substantial evidence.
The case marks a significant change in the relationship between the two companies. Under outgoing Apple chief executive Tim Cook, Apple integrated ChatGPT into some of its devices as it expanded its AI capabilities. However, the company later moved more of its AI features to systems powered by Google’s Gemini.
The dispute comes only months after OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman publicly praised Cook when he announced plans to step down. Altman described him as “a legend” and thanked him for his contributions to the tech industry.
Apple now claims that OpenAI adopted a deliberate approach aimed at acquiring confidential details about its future products and operations.
Among the defendants is io Products, a startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and later acquired by OpenAI. Apple is also suing Tang Yew Tan, OpenAI’s current chief hardware officer. Tan previously worked on the Apple Watch and iPhone during his long career at Apple. Another defendant is Chang Liu, who spent eight years at Apple as a senior electrical engineer.
Apple contends that the former employees had access to confidential projects, manufacturing processes, business relationships, and unreleased devices. The company argues that this knowledge enabled OpenAI to gain insight into Apple’s plans.
The lawsuit further alleges that during recruitment discussions, OpenAI interviewers sought additional information from current Apple employees. According to the complaint, some applicants were encouraged to bring physical Apple components to interviews as demonstration items.
Apple says the defendants worked together to use confidential material in support of OpenAI’s efforts to enter the consumer hardware sector. OpenAI is expected to introduce its first product, reportedly an AI-related keyboard, and is also preparing for a public stock listing.
Apple is seeking unspecified financial damages and a court order preventing OpenAI from acquiring or using any information that the company considers proprietary.
Other tech industry players like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) will be following how this lawsuit unfolds as it could potentially redefine the parameters under which employees can leave a company and join another within the same industry.
