Apple Expected to Unveil Maiden AI iPhone This Month

Earlier this week, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced that it would be launching the iPhone 16 on Sept. 9, 2024. The launch event, which will begin at 10 a.m. PT, will be held at Apple Parks’ Steve Jobs Theater. Many expect the latest iPhone to feature embedded artificial intelligence (AI). This announcement comes only months after the tech giant unveiled tools powered by Apple Intelligence at its annual Worldwide Developers’ Conference.

While users of the iPhone 15 Pro Max may be able to access some of these artificial intelligence features, the iPhone 16 will be first device designed fully with artificial intelligence in mind. This does not mean that no AI features have been integrated into iPhones before. For example, iPhones have improved autocorrect function and Live Text capabilities.

Generative artificial intelligence allows tools to create images, written work and audios based on prompts given by users. It may build on these features focused on improving personalization and interaction.

One CFRA Research technology analyst, Angelo Zino, believes that the new features in iPhones will be launched over the next couple of years with some being rolled out next year. This, Zino notes, will not be a cyclical process but an evolutionary one.

At its recent conference, Apple also announced that it had entered into a partnership agreement with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Analysts argue that the tech giant’s move into AI will start with Siri, its virtual assistant. Combining the latest ChatGPT model with Siri would allow the virtual assistant to offer more specific information, recall pictures taken a long time ago and maybe even learn a user’s personality and preference over time.

Many expect the new launch to change Apple’s iPhone trajectory, coming at a time when the phone’s sales in China have dipped because of increasing competition and uncertain economic conditions.

Some are concerned about the cost of the latest iPhone model, with enthusiasts debating for years if the models needed to be cheaper. This sentiment isn’t shared by investors, who prefer maximum profits to be generated. While CFRA doesn’t expect the iPhone 16’s price to be significantly higher than previous versions, the inclusion of artificial intelligence capabilities may see Apple raid prices across the board.

Apple isn’t the only phone maker to venture into AI. Samsung has already added a feature dubbed circle to search in its gadgets that allows users to quickly look up data on a device’s screen with a simple gesture.
