Anthropic’s Mythos Fate Shows the Mess in AI Regulation

Just days after its public debut, Anthropic’s most advanced AI system was removed from circulation following intervention by the Trump administration, which cited national security concerns tied to a reported security bypass.

Federal officials moved to restrict the model’s availability after learning of a jailbreak that allegedly allowed users to circumvent built-in safety protections. The resulting export controls not only blocked outside access but also prevented some Anthropic employees from using the technology. The company has argued that the issue does not justify such a sweeping response.

The dispute has reignited debate over how AI should be governed in the U.S. While many experts agree that government oversight is necessary when powerful AI systems could affect national security, critics say the current approach lacks transparency and consistency, creating uncertainty for companies operating in the sector.

Anthropic has found itself at the center of that debate. The company, one of the most valuable players in the AI industry and reportedly preparing for a public offering, has recently clashed with government agencies on several fronts.

Tensions escalated after disagreements with the Pentagon regarding modifications to safety restrictions intended for military applications. The Defense Department later classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

Concerns grew further when the company unveiled Mythos, an AI model it described as highly effective at identifying software vulnerabilities. Initially available only to select partners, a public version known as Fable 5 was released with additional safeguards on June 9.

According to administration officials, some of those protections proved insufficient, potentially giving cybercriminals access to a powerful tool. Anthropic subsequently suspended access to both systems in compliance with federal directives.

The controversy has prompted calls for greater openness in how cybersecurity decisions involving AI are made. Critics argue that unclear procedures could hinder American competitiveness as countries race to develop increasingly advanced AI technologies.

Ongoing discussions between Anthropic and federal officials suggest a possible resolution may be emerging. During the G7 summit, President Donald Trump described the talks as progressing well and later indicated he no longer considered the company a security threat.

The administration has generally favored a lighter regulatory approach, emphasizing innovation and competition with rivals such as China. Existing proposals encourage oversight through industry-specific regulators rather than a single national authority. At the same time, states including California and Florida have pursued their own measures addressing AI safety and consumer protection.

Industry leaders and cybersecurity researchers have criticized the Anthropic restrictions, arguing that advanced AI tools can strengthen digital defenses as well as pose risks. Others, including Trump adviser David Sacks, maintain that any vulnerability capable of enabling cyberattacks deserves serious attention.

Many observers now warn that the outcome of this dispute could influence how future AI systems are regulated across the U.S.

Tech entities like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) will be following how the talks between Anthropic and the Trump administrations go because they could give pointers on how cutting-edge technologies could be regulated in the country in the coming years.
