Anthropic has released a new report highlighting how its AI models have been targeted and misused by cybercriminals, as well as the measures it has taken to counter the threats. The Threat Intelligence report outlined multiple cases where its Claude models were implicated in large-scale fraud, extortion, and cybercrime.
According to Anthropic, tasks that once required years of technical training are now being automated, giving criminals new capabilities. Fraudsters are integrating AI into all stages of their schemes, from stealing identities and analyzing stolen records to crafting scams designed to manipulate victims.
One case study detailed an extortion scheme that used Claude Code to automate credential theft and infiltrate the networks of at least 17 organizations, including emergency services, hospitals, and religious and government institutions. Instead of encrypting stolen files with ransomware, the perpetrators threatened to release the data publicly unless victims paid demands that in some cases exceeded half a million dollars.
Anthropic said the attackers let the model analyze stolen financial information to calculate ransom amounts and even generate alarming ransom notes. The company described this as a new level of AI-assisted cybercrime and confirmed that the accounts involved were banned. It also stated that it had built a tailored detection system to identify similar activity in the future and shared information with the authorities.
Another case involved North Korean cybercriminals who allegedly used Claude to fabricate résumés, pass coding tests, and perform technical work to secure jobs at U.S. technology firms. Anthropic explained that these schemes are designed to funnel money back to North Korea, bypassing international sanctions.
The company stated that it had removed the accounts and upgraded its monitoring tools to flag suspicious activity, noting that this represents a new stage in employment fraud, as people with limited skills can now convincingly pass as qualified workers with the aid of AI.
The third case detailed in the report concerned a cybercriminal who built and sold ransomware with the help of Claude. The individual, who lacked advanced programming knowledge, marketed the software on forums at prices ranging between $400 and $1,200. Anthropic said it banned the user and strengthened its detection methods to prevent its platform from being used to produce malware in the future.
The company added that beyond these incidents, it has observed other attempts to misuse its systems, including efforts to compromise telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam. It noted that insights from these cases have already been incorporated into updated safety protocols and shared with industry and government partners.
This report is likely to give entities like Thumzup Media Corp. (NASDAQ: TZUP) plenty of food for thought as they continuously improve their safeguards aimed at protecting the data of the clients they work with.
